Mulch vs Compost by The Gardening Tutor-Mary Frost

Are you a bit confused about what compost is, what it means to ‘amend the soil’ or what the term ‘mulch’ means? You are not alone! This video is a primer to get you started with the language of compost and mulch. And yes, compost can be used as a mulch on top of the soil. We have done our best to keep this video short and to the point. There is so much more to share about the subject but we’ll save that for another day. -mary

  1. Great video! I'm trying to make my own compost but it's not going to be enough for my beds. Can I buy good compost from a garden supply store? Are there good brands?

  2. Beautiful and clear demonstrations. I am in zone 9B. I would love to use compost as a mulch around my plants, but I'm not sure how to manage it since the neighbor feeds feral cats. There sometimes are 15-20 cats using our yard as a litter box. My wife therefore wants all rocks on top of weed barrier. I have been able to stave off that approach but what to do. We have agreed to lay down compost, cardboard, and cover with woodchips to prevent our lawn from resurging and to make it easier or cheaper to clean out the cat poo. Any ideas would be so very helpful. It got so bad one year that my wife refused to eat the vegetables as they had gotten into our open garden beds. I am enclosing those this year.

  3. I used pine bark soil conditioner & mushroom compost to plant in.. do I still need to mulch as well?

  4. Anyone else find themselves to start breathing through their mouth while watching? lol

  5. I've had to stop composting because it was attracting rats into my yard and snakes were coming after the rats. If I try again I might put large buckets with holes drilled around the sides and bottom and bury them up to the lid and place an upside down saucer and brick and hide it with mulch. That way the worms are going in and out of the garden and the compost unit is covered hopefully. I will try 1 first and a tumbler.

  6. Hi, I just wanna put compost on a long area to mulch and prevent weeds from growing. Is compost okay to be used as mulch only? I don't wanna plant anything on the area

  7. COMPOST AND MULCH.
I do both in the fall. Not the spring.
And mulch is a pretection layer for all climates.
inorganic mulch is not worth your time or money. GO WITH ORGANIC MULCH.
    DONT MIX. JUST LAYER!

  8. As I watch this, i am getting so excited to know my soil will be teaming with life and worms making my garden super productive for next spring. Its like Christmas only I am a 47 year old kid. Awesome . Thanks for the video ma'am!

  9. Nice video! Thank you for the summary at the end. It was super helpful! 🙂
