What is MULCHING in Gardening or What Materials I can use and What Thickness for Mulching

Mulching is a process of applying some material to the surface of your garden soil to serve a certain purpose like :
1. to retain soil moisture by preventing water evaporation specially in summer,
2. to keep the soil temperature cooler,
3. to suppress weed growth, and lastly
4. for decorative purpose.

The thickness for mulching can be anywhere from 1 inch to 5 inches depending on the size of the plant, etc.

So What all Mulching Materials Can I use in my Garden?
THis choice depends on the Purpose of Mulching. I will list out some mulching material you can use for mulching your garden soil which are of two types – Biodegradable and non-biodegradables like plastic and rubber. Better to use biodegradables like:

Shredded leaves, shredded bark, wood chips, saw dust, grass clippings, coconut coir or coconut husk, hay, straw, shells, shredded newspaper, cardboard, wool, animal manure, etc.
