How to Install Landscape Fabric Like a Pro

What is the best way to get rid of weeds in a flowerbed?! STOP THEM BEFORE THEY START!!

This is a great DIY project for keeping troublesome weeds out of your flower beds, gravel areas, under patios, synthetic turf, you name it!!

Beware of the big box stores though… “weed barriers” that you can see through aren’t worth a dime. Use the materials that the Pro’s do and make sure the job is done right!! As with all aspects of landscaping… If you want the best results, PREPARATION IS KEYYYY!!!!

At your request here are some links to the products I used or recommend using to tackle this project….

https://amzn.to/3hrsPVi – Professional Grade 5oz. Landscape Fabric (Fabric Tensile strength is measured in ounces the higher the ounces the stronger the material… Personally, I wouldn’t use anything less than 5 oz for a successful installation). Once you click on this link you have the choice to buy this fabric in different lengths and widths depending on your application purposes. Please choose the best option for your needs but don’t forget to account for fabric overlap and possible mistakes…better to have some leftover than not enough.

https://amzn.to/2PLsOxw – Professional Grade (Heavy Duty) Landscape Staples that far surpasses anything you could find at a big box store.

https://amzn.to/37cL1er – Durable Dead Blow Mallet

  1. How did you get the fabric around that tree so tight? It looks like you cut a small hole and pull it over, down, and around that tree. Any tips how to do that??

  2. Hi how do you feed fertilizer after covering the surrounding of the plants? Do you have to remove the fabric, feed and cover back every time. Also can we cover this fabric by spreading mulch on top? Will it prevent weed from growing?

  3. Thanks you for the information and tutorial, am attempting to order the fabric through your affiliate link but the price for the 5×250 roll was $99 and once I put it in the cart minutes later it showed to be unavailable, but at the same time available with a new price of $119. The fabric doesn’t show to have a brand meaning the seller can ship whatever they please. Do you have another link ?

  4. I came for Minecraft fabric mod loader, But I’m here now so, I guess I will stay 🤷😂

  5. As a professional landscaper i discourage fabric for many reasons, It just does not belong in a natural landscape.

  6. What if I'm putting it in with plants and shrubs already there should I just pull the weeds and grass that's already there.

  7. Just what I was looking for! Thank you!! Question though – you suggested NOT getting the landscape fabric and staples from a "big box store". Where DO you get it from then? Just a 'smaller" store? Is that something like True Value? Or is there some kind of specialty landscaping store you'd recommend? Thanks!

  8. how would you recommend laying fabric over a bed containing preexisting shrubs with long unruly stalks?

  9. whats the purpose of laying down that fabric? is it to fontrol week growth if this is so than we can use plastic also for the same. purpose.. kindly some one plz enlighten me i am going to decorate my lawn with this kind of raised beds where i ll need such things so can i use plastic instead?

  10. What is that paper called where can I find it in southern California? The stuff in home depot sucks did not work weeds coming trough it not even one year.

  11. As a professional landscaper with 35 years experience I can tell you now weed mat went out of fashion in 1990. No professionals would consider such a waste of time and money that also causes diseases, stop microorganisms, helps prevent rain water from penetrating and slows down evaporation in wet periods.
These types of videos by untrained cowboys should be removed.
Weeds grow on top of the mat eventually.

  12. Yes this is exactly the barrier I want !
I already have small bushes with pine straw but the cheap stuff use before did not prevent any weeds from growing. This is going to hard to put down now when I have bushes!

  13. I live in Texas so not able to hire this landscaping firm. I reached out to him with a question and he was so nice and informative with lots of excellent options/ideas. This is a great company run by a super good guy!

  14. I live in Fl and its always raining. Can i use the plastic layer under my rocks? Its an area with NO plants or vegetation.

  15. Great video man. A question though – I’m laying a pathway very similar to the one in the vid and using the same fabric. I sprayed some water on to test the drainage and it doesn’t seem to soak away very quickly (if at all). With the path being next to the house wall, as in your video, is there a danger of the water pooling there and causing issues? Or does it drain better when covered with gravel for example? Thanks.

  16. Yeah it's great stuff but remember, if a seed gets caught on top of the fabric (under a rock or piece of wood) it will germinate and the roots grow down through the fabric into the dirt.

  17. I thought this project was a no brainer…until 2 weeks later and the damn weeds start growing through cheap crap. Thanks for the video. I learned my lesson.
