  1. I had a weird issue last year, where I put wood on the bottom, and put straw/hay on top of the wood. Don't do that! The hay turns into a weird mat instead of really breaking down. Then the water becomes stagnate.
Alternatively, I am having trouble now with some of the totes becoming hydrophobic. I'm not sure why.

  2. Wow, I always thought that one hole was enough for the pot or tote, even with a clay type soil. Thanks for the tip.

  3. Leaf Miners! So many problems in my small chair garden. Now the heat. I felt like burning it up last night. BUT.. I have decided to learn from all these problems and pray we will still be able to buy fresh vegetables until the food shortage is over. Maybe 2024? 🙃

  4. Ty Robbie! I just got a whole bunch of tulle that I ordered 🙂 ty for sharing all your experiences with us. God bless <><

  5. Last year I put branches and wood in the bottom of the pot turned out ants make it their home no wonder the tomato died

  6. I know this isn't what this video is about but I had to tell you again , I am loving that compost tea and so r my plants I swear they grew a inch and new leaves the next day , I get my kitchen scraps and let them soak and rotten in water like you said that is the best , thank u , thank u , thank u ,🖤🖤

  7. Thank you Robbie for discussing this it sure will help all of us.

May I ask a question here: I have a Tote that has been invaded by an Ant's Nest and they are under the tote which is on a wooden old bench that is still standing, and now they are laying their eggs in the tote. Sigh. I don't want to use chemicals or something that would hurt the plants and contaminate the soil since I am doing vegy plants.

Please adivse and thanks so much.

    Sherry 🙂

  8. I crush water bottles and put the lids back on them and put them in the bottom if I don't have other chunky organic matter. I only have 2 small trees in my yard.

  9. Do you ever try companion planting? I found out by accident by putting oregano next to broccoli it protects it from cabbage butterfly. One of my broccoli were getting eaten up by little green worms while another in a different pot didn't have even one damaged leaf. I looked it up and found out the pot of oregano I had sat next to the one plant was protecting from the munching caterpillars! It is amazing how these companion plantings work!

  10. I've been finding so many uses for tulle since watching your channel! I bought like 10 yards with a 50% coupon from joann's but it's been so useful I'm going to use your eBay link to order more in bulk. We had a bad wind storm here in Indiana and I had a limb fall. I stripped it of the leaves to compost and I broke down the limb into individual branches and sticks I can use as plant supports. Little strips of tulle hold the plant gently to the branch stuck down in the pot!

  11. Good topic to cover Robbie.
In my case, the combo of oak leaves, and oak branches broke down into a heavy sticky blockage at the bottom. It did take a year to happen (noticed it this past week) and everything has to come out in order to fix. But… I get to start a fresh set of plants once it's done. 🤩🤎

  12. Hi Robbie!! I absolutely LOVE your videos!! You are always so informative and you have such a cheerful disposition and pleasant voice to listen to.
I do have a problem, though, when I watch them in the evening. It's 9pm now. I will have a hard time falling asleep because I will have all these gardening plans running through my mind, instead of falling asleep! I'm not sure if it's shame on you, or shame on me for not waiting until tomorrow to watch this! ;-} Love you lots, tho!
As far as drainage, I also do Bonsai, and I use scraps of metal screen (like for screen doors) to cover my drainage holes. It doesn't break down, the holes are large enough to drain easily, and it's stiff enough to cover larger holes in the pot itself. That seems to work really well for me and might work well for holes in totes to get good drainage.
I hope this helps someone out there who might make this work for them as well!
And as you say, "Eat what you grow!!" Love you hun!

  13. I love this video. I know to put things in big containers so you don't need to use that much soil. But to put things in any size containers so as to not block the holes I never thought of. Thanks for the reminder.

  14. Before you mentioned tulle and the sizes of the rolls you buy and the price. I can't find that video? Can you let me know. Thanks. I just checked online and the Michael's Craft store sells them in my town. I want to compare the price with the ones you buy to see if they are a good deal or not.

  15. I absolutely love your videos. I have started a tote and I have a volunteer in it and I have no clue. I collect cans and plastic for recycle where I live and I someties get plant material from what others toss. So, hence the mystery. Guess we will see.

  16. I just found your channel and loved the idea of totes and set up several with pinecones and sticks on bottom. I then added dried leaves and kitchen scraps. Then miracle grow potting soil. The totes are planted. The drain holes blocked in less than a week. Maybe next time I will omit the dried leaves. I thought this would be so easy, but it is frustrating.

  17. Great ideas. You keep me motivated when I don’t feel up to going outside (TX) all I have to do is watch u. I have figured I like my holes higher bc everything dries out super fast. I do love growing in totes!

  18. Hey Robbie. Love your videos. Can you share the best way to store Zucchini? Thank you.

  19. Good morning Robbie. Hey Kitty !! its a beautiful summer hot morning here. Your bird garden looks awesome. i watered all my outdoor plants and flowers. I filled the bird feeders also. filled all the solar bird baths and what not?? There is a Heatwave coming. My husband went out early to get our fruits and foods ,water. And another fan. The birds here are singing beautiful. Happy as a Lark !! as the saying goes. I will be using wood and branches and Tulle. in our vertical garden we will be starting ASAP. We sure have lots of tree branches in the yard. are seashells good for on the bottom of your plants? we get alot of clam and oyster shells. You also have a wonderful day. say hey to Gary. from Nora and Manuel.

  20. Hi Robbie. All my four raised totes are drilled at one end like yours with 1/4" holes. They were filled like yours with sticks, small tree branches, TP rolls etc. I've noticed now after a year, that a couple of them don't drain directly into the buckets below. The water comes out but it "travels" along the bottom and drips off the side. Should I simply redrill the holes? I don't want to empty it and disturb the soil biology that has grown in there?

  21. Robbie! Robbie! I found beautiful PURPLE 5 gallon buckets at Wal-Mart! They were under $5. In case you wanted them. I snagged 3 for myself.
Unfortunately, none of them will see my garden. They are probably too darkly colored for the desert anyway.

  22. Hi Robbie, I don't know where to turn. I have a hummer that can't seem to figure out how to use the feeder. He keeps poking at the flower around the opening but doesn't quite get his beak into the hole. He had a feather hanging from the side of his beak but that just came off. I'm concerned about him. Any ideas?

  23. Thank you for this helpful information. I just love your garden videos, they`re creative, informative, & fun.

  24. I love watching your videos. It feels like listening to a good friend with good advice. I’m trying out as many of your tips as I can so I can get better results with container gardening. I used to have a big in ground garden that grew everything (it was an old pigeon coup site). I can no longer kneel and bending over is rough. Last year I got some raised beds and have limited success. I’m glad I found your channel since we live in the same state and have the same climate issues. So far, my garden looks very healthy. Thank you Robbie.

  25. Huge amounts of grubs in my raised bed. 4000 red wigglers in there . They WERE loving life 🤣 . Anything that will get rid of them but not harm my worms ?

  26. QUESTION Hi Robbie you have been such an inspiration and have encouraged me to start my own container garden here in Ohio. Thank you!!🙂 My buttercrunch lettuce stem is coming up about 2 inches above the soil should I add more soil at this point? I am ready to harvest it. Since the stem is going to be higher than the soil line it seems that the stem will be weak or wobbly stem. Your thoughts??

  27. Good points! I lost my tomatoes last season cos I think they drowned :/ as the soil was really wet when I tipped the pot out. Now I put tulle bags of perlite at the bottom 🙂 and hoping for a better harvest this season! Thanks for all the great tips 😀, much appreciated 👍

  28. Hey Robbie, I have a question, on your totes that are on the chairs, do you only have a drainage hole in the front for the bucket to catch water? Do you also have other holes? And do worms still get in those totes on chairs? Thanks!
