This wonderful bean is called Hyancinth Bean and also know as lablab, seim, or Oori. This amazing video I show my garden harvest in the end of September 2020.

We see how to grow and harvest the beautiful Hyacinth or Lablab bean in a container. Including their soil and climate preference, and general Shokher bagan Garden tips.
Try growing this bean in your garden for its tender pods that can be cooked and eaten. Lablab or Hyacinth Beans is a popular vegetable in South East Asian and African cooking especially India and Bangladesh. It’s delicious pods make great vegetable curries. Remember this bean is different from Lima/Broad Beans which are grown for their seed. Hyacinth or Lablab beans are grown to harvest tender pods which are then cooked for eating and do well growing in USA, Europe and the UK.

Lablab has plenty of names like hyacinth bean, Bonavist bean/pea, Dolichos bean, Seim bean, Egyptian kidney bean, Indian Field bean, Bataw, Australian pea and also as Avarekai in Kannada.
ABOUT LABLAB (HYACINTH) — Lablab or Hyacinth is a bean which belongs to Fabaceae family. It is a perennial plant, which is grown mainly for their bean, Lablab flowers are seasonal and Hermaphrodite, i.e. a single flower contains both male and female part. And it self pollinates, there is no need of external pollinators.
There are two primary type of Lablab (Hyacinth), the Vine and the Bush type. This one is bush type. In some varieties of Lablab you can also eat the bean pod. But not this one ‘Indian Field beans’ Flower colour also changes from purple to white based on variety. In some variates the Vine is used as just ornamental plant since they are perennial.
Growing technique of Seem Bean/ Lablab/ Broadbean/ Indian bean. These beans are easiest to grow and everyone can grow it in your home or garden or in cans in your roof.
These are highly nutritious and full of Protein and Vitamins. It also contains lots of iron , calcium, manganese, Magnesium .etc.
NAMES; Hyacinth bean,Seem bean Sem bean Semphali,Indian field bean,Lablab bean,Egyptian kidney bean,Avarakkai,Vaal,Broad bean etc.
Soil Requirement: Loam soil with rich in compost. Soil should be well drained. It should be kept moist but not wet.
Timings: Sow the seeds in July and August,
Flowering comes in October, November, Fruits harvesting: January to March.
It is very popular in South east countries and specially in China.
In South India it is mostly used in making Curry.
The tender Pods are eaten as vegetables and ripe seeds as pulses.
The pods are rich in Protein and Fibre.

    I grew these and have so many beautiful purple pods. The beans are extremely plump and probably ready to harvest.

    However, I'm not sure how to prepare them to make sure they are edible.

    Please help! I really want to safely cook these. I hear they are delicious.
