Thatch IS NOT Dead Accumulated Grass Clippings

Most people have a fundamental misunderstanding as to what thatch is. Thatch is not accumulated grass clippings from mowing the lawn it’s a thick layer of fiberous material that doesn’t break down quickly made up of stems, crowns, roots, rhizomes, and stolons. Layers made up of this kind of material grow thicker over time when irrigation sessions are regular and shallow especially when the lawn is fertilized.

Getting rid of the problem means changing your patterns of lawn maintenance and adding materials to the lawn to stimulate microbial breakdown of the thatch layer. We want to push root development into the soil below the thatch layer while pushing the breakdown of the thatch layer at the same time.

  1. Watched the rest of the video. Great job. Best of luck to you and your family on your new adventure

  2. I remember the original video, got me following you.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention mechanical aeration.

  3. Bitter sweet video, was great to watch the journey. Hope you and your family have a safe move.

  4. Hey Brian,
Many happy memories in your new home. I believe you said you’re moving to Southern California?
Definitely enjoyed looking at your breathtaking views from this home.

  5. Well buddy, been watching you from the beginning. The kids and critters growing as well as the turf.. and you too! You are doing what I did back in 82 from Klamath to SoCal. I wish you and your family well on your new adventure and I assume you will continue to produce video's? Okay, on to subject. Since I now have turf to play with thanks to you and other contributors I can say I am semi educated. The deep watering has made the biggest difference for drought resistance. Not only does it help resist drought but the critters as well. Let me explain. Where I am the turkeys, deer and raccoons pull the grass out by the roots. Initially when I watered shallow not understanding the importance of deep watering I had a heck of a time keeping it alive. Now that the roots are deeper and although the critters still do their thing with pulling the grass, it doesn't come out by the shallow roots anymore. Thanks for all the mentoring. Hope to see you again once you are settled in!

  6. Do you think any of the liquid dethatch products would help breakdown peat moss? I'm considering using the Turf Titan thatch buster to see if it would help. I have about a 1/4in of peat moss on my yard from seeding this fall.

  7. This was a fantastic explanation. Glad you revisited this topic; I hadn't seen the original video. Question.. does core aeration fix this problem or is that for something else?

  8. Thanks for the video Brian and good luck on the move and the new house. Looking forward to seeing your plans and progress on the new property

  9. What a great long term experiment. Thanks for sharing. Are you still doing the buffalograss series?

  10. Kudos Brian for great content as usual, but also for a really good concept for a video. Informative as hell! Plus your depth of detail is SOOOO HELPFUL. I've said it before(in regards to myself)and I'm sure I speak for many of your viewers w/o your level of detail and your easy-going approach makes "attacking" lawncare DIY-style not only doable, but almost easy. DAMN SURE FUN & a labor of love .💯 Keep up the GREAT WORK and safe travels.

  11. True, thatch is not glass clippings, nor desiccated grass blades still attached to the plant. But that is what 99 percent of the powering raking videos are calling thatch. Does it settle into the soil and become thatch? Maybe. Seems the solution would be increased bacteria to accelerate decomposition.

  12. So if you have a well ( endless water ) and a in ground irrigation system thatch isn't a problem so much ? Well maybe a spongy lawn maybe .

  13. Reality TV on a lawn channel – what a great comparison! I never imagined! Great video, and good luck on your move!

  14. Can't wait to see your new place. I've learned a lot here, even though I'm in NE Oklahoma and we have different grass types. Thank you for your efforts!
