Love to see what you are doing. I'm having to redo a lot of my totes this year for the same reason as you…roots growing in the drainage holes. I'm so thankful you showed this to us so I know what to do and how to do it. Otherwise I wouldn't have a clue why my plants are thriving. Thank you so much.
Love your site. Have been watching you and Gary for quite a few years now. Covid created a lot of things to shift direction, but this year I am getting back to thinking about the garden again. It makes one feel whole again. Thank You.
Looking good. Love that you have a couple wheelbarrows make it easier for yourself.
Totes on chairs will deter those dang tree roots 😉 it makes so much sense!
I love your garden! Maybe you could put all of the totes eventually on the chairs since you find them so often. We have lots of gophers and I live in a mobile home park and can't plant too much, but I have been putting my totes on chairs like you do and have been very successful. Thanks for your ideas. I have really appreciate your ideas! Thank you so much!!!
Wow the wall is looking great and another info filled video thank you Robbie🙂👍🥦🐾🐾
Robbie, I set my grow totes on pallets. I staple contractor bags on Bottom of the Pallets……Give it a whirl. I’ve no roots, no landscape;ing needs around my totes. I got fancy, painted some pallets. 😘
So many of us now gardening in totes. I used to compost in big pots and now have more growing area since I decided to move those big pots in the totes.
You could always try the no dig method with bales of hay, compost, etc on top of the ground to make garden beds..?🙂
Robie I was out doing my winter sowing and was a great day 4 Celsius. However tomorrow will be dropping to minus 14 Celsius and this is considered warm for this year as the temperatures have been consistently cold this winter. We reached minus 37 Celsius with the windchill. What a winter.🇨🇦
Looks awesome 👏👏👏👏
like your videos thank you ,, my question is do you plant a seed or two (say tomatoe) in a 5gal bucket or do you go thru the stages of small container, then transplant to bigger container then bigger ect.
I did the same and spread out more bunny poo , paper, leaves and kitchen scraps to all my bins outside for worms and plants . Even with all the freezes we have intermittently had this winter there are still lots of worms in there. I am looking forward to warmer weather so I can get out and get down and dirty in the garden .
I love your wall garden. Do you think that moving the planter totes away from the wall a foot or two would stop the roots? Probably not huh. It looks good all cleaned up.
I hope you stay safe and warm. We are below freezing and might get to 40F today but the next 3 to 5 days ….brrrrrrrrrr…….
You have just gone gaga for those wheel barrows . I don't blame you . I have my Gorilla Cart and I just love it . My old one wheel wheel barrow is going to be another planting spot for herbs .
Wow. Not used to seeing Grey as your "color." Did you run out of paint? Your other chair garden is so wonderfully colorful!
Wow those are some bad roots i never new they did that roots gophers and 🐇 what a combination that will keep you really busy i hope you can get some relief from all that.
Have a blessed day ❤️🌸🌹🌺🌷
I have been picking up the gray totes they seem to disappear and look more natural to me.
Wow! Two wheel barrows now.
Wowzers they are strong growing roots !
I thought you could put the totes on chairs or other items to pick them up off the ground. Regardless, your garden always looks great. Loving your videos Robbie! 😀❤️
I have lots of land, too, that I choose not to plant in. I'm growing in totes because eventually every vege garden fails because weeds and moles/voles take over. Last summer was so easy in totes. No weeding! No back breaking stooping, squatting, kneeling, digging, or hoeing!
I love a garden that isn't perfect but thats just me. I think you will have a lot of food coming out of those totes this spring and summer.
You're just the right gardener for me because you save me money and time. I wanted to tidy up my patch of dirt, that's what I call my garden but just like your weather is yucky and raining here.
Had to chuckle…” the little bit of rain we got”…. I’m in So Cal too. I know exactly what you mean.
Where do you find the dirt to put in the totes originally? And do you buy worms? I have no worms in my garden at all!
im in PA and we noticed aircraft and helicopters flying really low..also, you were talking about earthworms in the crate on the chair, just wondering if earthworms can get into the crate if its off the ground? and then you had those little bugs in your soil and I was wondering if putting bagged soil on top of the soil with the bugs would be better to plant in
How long does it take for your scraps to turn to soil?
I bought 5 totes from thrift store today for $1 each, then I found a bolt of tulle for $3. It wasn’t a full bolt, but has probably 10 yards on it. I’m excited to try your tote composting and growing method as an extension in addition to my in ground garden. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in tote gardening.
Missed my age by one. Looks like I'm 65. Just finished reading all the comments right down to number 1!☺️. You've created community Robbie. Can you imagine what it would be like if all 65 of us could gather round your backyard and just talk gardening? Cup of tea on hand of course. Well I have my cup of tea, it's the end of the day and instead of feeling isolated I feel refreshed for having visited your site. God bless you, Gary Kitty and your wonderful gardens. Looking forward to "relaxing" in mine as only a gardener could😊.
Bet ya it’s going to look.great. I’m doing container gardening like you do. Hoping for good outcomes.
Robbie you really did lots of work in that garden, I hope you have a great growing session!!!!
If you have a leaf blower you could blow the leaves and loose dirt and debris from around the totes especially if you left a few inches between the wall and tote. Love your videos, new subscriber here.
Are you saying that the roots are coming in to the totes or are they coming from the items you are putting in the bottom of the totes?
could you recommend what size container for what veg plant, and maybe how of each in a container. thanks
Loved your gardening adventures! Very impressed, love to garden a little and to eat what I produce! Particularly like quick growing things! Aussie Lady
Super duper garden! I love your composting in place idea. I have been feeding my worm juice to the pots and totes to replenish their soil. I also planted peanuts in my old tomato pots to fix nitrogen,, and I eat the greens.This. time of year is worm prime time because the weather has been cooler at night, and some days cool as well, down here in SW Florida. They have been going gang busters, and I have to keep them fed more. My pots are wicking pots with cans, and plastic milk jugs in the bottom to catch the rain and hold a reserve of water for the roots. Our dry season is starting soon. I am behind schedule with planting. Like you we have had some bitter cold days, and some frost. But some volunteer tomatoes I covered up for frost are producing tomatoes for heavens sske!
I planted in containers last year, I moved and left all behind. The soil has been outside in the containers through Winter, can I still use this soil to plant this year? Zone 7a in Tennessee
Cardboard makes a great barrier for weeds & roots.
A “wheel barrel” isn’t a thing. A wheelbarrow is.
Looks like cypress
My granddaughter said.. let's grow squash now..😂we are in zone 7b.. I convinced her to plant potatoes (last week)
I have to tell you that composting in place is awesome! I love it
Where do you get the chairs from please?
I just learned a bit! Also fyi blood meal and bone meal keeps rabbits gophers and squirrels away.
I live in Ontario canada..and it's cold and snowy…i am enjoying your information and will use it to make soil soon.
I had a similar issue with tree roots in my garden beds. I ended up with a two foot high pile of tree roots I dug and cut out of the garden. Maybe my plants will grow this year!
Hi ! As I was watching your video tonight I know know where you live ! 😂! I was a flight attendant for 32 years and my husband was a pilot and the flight plan into SAN was amazing!
As I sat in the cockpit one night when I was not on duty, just a jump seat rider, and we made the approach into SAN, I was amazed of how low we flew over this area to land the airplane ! Yes you could probably see me on the cockpit 😱!
No not really, but it seemed that way !
Wow, you live right in the heart of SAN ! How fun !
It was my favorite overnight and my brother moved to Mission Hills 😁! So classy and I filled his yard with Gardenia, lemon and lime trees ! 😀among other Ca style lovely variations!
Anyway, I live in Cleveland Ohio and I am so excited to start our Spring gardening ! Snow expected the next few days ! ( damn you HARPP)
Hey, I found 6, 18 gallon tubs at Target today, so happy 😁!
On my travels today, I shared many people to your videos !🥰🥰🥰!
I know that they will now-know, why I bought those huge containers ! 😂🤣😂!
Keep making videos 😍😍😍! Happy Gardening ! It’s what we do 🤓🤓🤓🤓❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Do you plant okra
I just saw I think 24 gal totes at Sam's club for $10 black much thicker then reg totes. I didn't have a vehicle they would fit so I'll be going back to get some. I know this video I'm seeing is old but from your recent videos I ran to $1 store and bought 13 pitchers to compost in for my fruit trees, I like that idea because they have a handle I can use yarn and tie to trees so my dog (German Sheppard) don't run off with them. He is upsetting me I had milk container with seeds that just started to grow and he pulled them out of my totes and chewed to pieces. 🤬 all that work recycling a few creamer containers and planting in. Wasted dirt and seeds I need to find a way to get him to STOP
Raise up totes on some bricks/ cement blocks to keep tree roots out of holes
