How To Create a Late Summer Container | Gardening with Creekside

By mid-August, our spring-planted containers can begin to look a little tired and sad. Join me as I show you how to create a late-summer container that will thrive in the hot summer sun and humidity! Not only will this container bring lots of color to your garden, but it is a major pollinator and hummingbird attractor.

  1. Yes it is — Perfect — !!! ….. and of course Beautiful …. Thanks for sharing this idea …. Hugs …..!!!

  2. Jenny I really like the height of the plant material in the container. It really balances nicely with the height of the pot. Also, really enjoyed seeing the pics from Blowing Rock. Did not know the town had such nice flowers. Thanks.

  3. Jenny and Jerry, my kids grew up and are gone from home, but I still remember times when we needed a break from those teenage hormones!
Jenny, you made me laugh when you said, 'We're gonna make this work people', as you packed the salvia into that planter. I love your determination, and the planter turned out looking gorgeous! I still have some annuals that need to be planted or tossed, so that will be my project for this evening. Thanks for the motivation! ~Margie

  4. Hi Jenny and Jerry fantastic pot and plants will do some of mine this weekend as they are tired looking thank you for all your tips love your videos best regards to you all from the South East Coast of Ireland 🇮🇪😀😊

  5. Keep us up-dated on this pot would like to see the growth on it. Might plant this next year in my container area if it get fuller. I have planted the Witch Coleus ( not the whole name, but the only thing that come to mind right now) in a container on the deck with Lemon grass and the Coleus is out growing and is as tall as the Lemon grass right now. Can not wait to see yours. Stay Safe till the next time

  6. Beautiful combo, Jenny! 👏👏👏 I think I would have popped in a Sweet Caroline sweet potato vine to mirror the Lime Time! I'm a sucker for that lime color! Hope to get down there to see y'all next spring.
    P. S. Tell Jackson that all we do is plant and water. It's God who keeps making it grow. (1 Corinthians 3:6, 7) ♥️🌸🌿

  7. This is beautiful! I was about to sit down to watch it and then remembered I needed to feed my containers, lol.

  8. Gorgeous!
Get a load of that 'Drinking Gourd' hosta in the fridge. Wow!
Jenny, I planted up a container maybe a little bigger than yours. I did not drill a drainage hole in the container, I placed a gallon can upside down and used lots of soil. I think that's what helped keep it happy during this very dry and hot summer. I elevated it onto a plant stand so it's not directly on the hot pavers. Very pretty.
I planted it with 4 coral geraniums, 3 blue/white Angelonias and filled in the open areas with 'Diamond Frost' euphorbia. (Maybe it was 'Diamond Snow.' It's hard to identify, labels were unreliable.)

  9. Beautiful container! Curious, is that an old fridge that is planted up with the hosta and ferns??? So neat !!

  10. This is the best potting video I have seen. I have a large pot also which I'll do some fill ins. Thank you.

  11. Good Morning Jenny. I love this combination! 💕 I live near Chattanooga in zone 7b. I planted several Rocking Playing the Blues salvia for the first time this year. PW says it’s an annual but I though I remembered hearing you say it is a perennial in our zone. Is that correct? I sure hope so. It is my favorite plant so far! Thanks for teaching us so much🌿 Anne C

  12. That hosta is doing beautifully in the refrigerator! I don't remember the variety but it's a beauty. And what kind of ferns are those beside it? Trying to find some that will work in zone 6.

  13. Will the plants stay in the container throughout the winter? I have purple fountain grasses with lime time Coleus in containers right now and I'm wondering if I need to winterize them. I'm in Greenville, NC zone 8a

  14. Did you make a video on the refrigerator planter? I would like to know all the plants that you put into it.

  15. So beautiful! Great ideas and advise, I will look into pentas now since we love to add any good pollinator plants. Thanks Jenny!
