  1. Speaking of blooming shrubs, I was just curious as to how your Fairytrail Bride hydrangea is doing. I was going to order some but I wanted to see how much yours has grown over the past year. Love, love, love your garden!

  2. The test of a garden is how it looks in winter. Yours looks good because you have structure! I absolutely agree with you about mulch, compost and landscape fabric. Jim Putnam gets apoplectic about landscape fabric. I've put it down and pulled it up. I'm retired so while I can't do the things.i could do when I was 40, I do have more time. If you are working full-time, then working in the garden ights and weekends, you can get burned out. Take some time to enjoy the garden!

  3. Love your goals for 2022!! I’m in a similar boat…I’ve added/expanded so many things in the garden that 2022 is about watching the success of those efforts! I have found that the white version of perennials tend to be more drought resistant, bloom longer, require less dead heading even. This list so far includes salvia, veronica, tall phlox, and daisies. One white perennial I am trying for the first time in 2022 is Lesser Catmint so fingers crossed for it 🤞🏼

  4. I ordered dahlias a couple of months ago and have regretted it ever since……oh well cest la vie! Thanks for another great video! BTW I totally love how you end your videos!!

  5. I'm so excited to see your garden this year! My moon gate just arrived and should be installed soon. 💗🌱💗

  6. I think your choice to add drip irrigation is a great one in reducing your water consumption, drip is by far the most efficient way to water and there's lots of options for converting sprinklers to drip. Lawn is the biggest source of water consumption for most home gardens. It seems to me that most of your plants will not need water after fully established, even ancient hydrangeas will learn to adapt to your infrequent summer rains. I have all my new gardens on drip but know that in the near future, I'll be able to turn the system off for most of the year. The issue I think we both have is that we've planted many small starter plants which will need more water support to grow but of course help with the budget. All the best with your 2022 goals!

  7. It’s good to hear I’m not alone in my struggles with dahlias. So many people rave about them and I love the way they look, but I just don’t find joy in growing them. In my garden they were constantly covered with pests and they just didn’t grow well at all. I have tried so many strategies with no success. So I finally decide dahlias just aren’t my thing. I’m moving on. 😊

  8. Yes, winter will end! I'm in South Louisiana, and right now it's already 60 degrees! Our high is 70 for today. As a gardener, we all have our ups and downs. I'm enjoying this beautiful weather, because our summers are so hot and humid! But that doesn't stop me! I love gardening. And I really appreciate your garden. To be a young garden, it's beautiful! I definitely will be watching! Smile, spring is coming!

  9. I'm often uncertain about how I grow dahlias. I know I AM growing them, but how? It must be said that dahlia tubers are ubiquitous in retail, tubers in the garden multiply like coat hangers, and typical types are not very expensive to buy. I may experiment with keeping them in the ground here in NC zone 7b (almost 8a). Labor intensive is the catch phrase when I lift, plan to store, care during storage, divide and pot up, and then plant/stake/water/deadhead. Erin at The Impatient Gardener has it down pat and she's in Wisconsin. I, therefore, should not be making this too difficult here in NC. I'll follow you, Matthew, to see what you've decided to do about dahlias in Ohio clay.

  10. Oh bless you, I do not envy you that snow and cold weather. It’s supposed to be in the 60’s and 70’s here this week in my part of NC and I’m so excited I can’t stand myself. Thank you for another great video, and southerner to southerner I’ll try to send you some of these warm weather vibes lol 🤞🏼🙏🏼🌞🌞
Stay amazing and be blessed 🙂

  11. Do you watch northlawn flower on YouTube? She is making a pollinator strip in her backyard for more cut flowers. I know how you like to keep things tidy so I'm unsure if that would work for you.

  12. I am sure someone will probably correct me, but it seems as though Laura from Garden Answer said not long ago that she is not going to dig her dahlias up this fall either.

  13. You sound like me. If is too much maintenance get rid of it. I only water my annual s. And it it does, oh well, I’ll try something else. I use your end quote a lot and I hope I am a light

  14. Your garden goals are VERY similar to my garden goals. I can’t wait to see it all come together. I love these videos where you just talk about gardening/goals or reviewing things. Thank you for making a video and including us in your thought processes.

  15. The transformation of your garden has been amazing! Your plans of making your garden less maintenance is too. You’ll need to have time to sit and enjoy the fruits of your labor as well.

  16. I hear you about July and August with no rain here in my part of Ohio. I have no drip irrigation and water all my gardens by hand. That’s all that gets done those two months. I have never tried dahlia but thought I may try some, glad I watched this. Think I’ll pass till I see some success stories in our area.

  17. Lol 😂😂😂 yes I'm in Ohio with you and no winter never ends it goes from cold to death lol I was born and raised here and every year I say the same thing hoping for a change but nope Ohio says we have multiple seasons at multiple times so……. It's such a hit or miss for me

  18. Thank you Matthew for another wonderful, informative video. I was just thinking about my garden the other day & was pondering the use of Preen in my fence line??? I would not use around plants at all, but really tired of the bindweed & bermuda grass that gets really difficult to manage around my fences. These fences were already here when we moved in so too late to put fabric under.

  19. Against my mom’s warning about ajuga, I planted 1dark leaf. Over the yrs I’ve spread them out to outline the front beds. Mainly to reduce the amount of mulch and hoping to edge less. First 2 yrs, I never saw blooms because I kept splitting them so often. But the 3rd yr I really liked the outline of the leaves and when it bloomed, the flowers were a deep violet. Yes, they spread but I have not found them hard to pull at all. Like you said everyone has different experiences.

  20. I love your low maintenance approach. I so agree with the addition of additional ground covers. I'm working on that in my garden as well. I love burgundy Glow ajuga. It grows and spreads beautifully for me. Oh, and I also dislike cutting blooms from my garden. Feels wrong lol.

  21. Hi Matthew! This was enjoyable. I like it when you take us for a walk and chat about your plans for the coming season, and how you plan on cutting down on the maintenance. I'm so ready for spring to get here, too! Thank you so much for sharing!
