In this video I’m showing you how I very easily built a boardwalk walkway to my Outdoor Kitchen. I built simple 2×4 bases and connected them together to make a path, covering them with Trex Transcend Composite Decking boards to match my deck. I find this method to be easier than a brick, stone or gravel path. Check out the video to see it all come together!

  1. My Goodness! I’ve just bought a little island that is like a forrest on rocks, and I wanted to find a way to build a something like this to be able to go all around without stepping on plants, and avoiding any possible ticks (and Lyme disease), but I just couldn’t find a way, and you just showed me, even better you being also a woman! The only problem for me is going to be getting the material on to the island, as we only use very small boats, but I will find the way! I appreciate you sharing with us your knowledge and skills from the bottom of my heart!

  2. Forget the work of making the boxes and just lay treated lumber timbers parallel to one another. waaaay easier and cheaper.

  3. Thank you! My rebel spirit is overjoyed to discover yours. I just installed a paver patio and the thought of doing another one out front makes my back hurt. Lol You inspired me to design a less strenuous project that will add curb appeal. 👍

  4. April, your free-flowing walkway is beautiful. 7:56 I use this method of spacing curved redwood walkway planks when I don't want to custom cut a series of planks for the radius. Sometimes there just isn't enough time. I have used hidden Simpson Strong Tie brand deck fasteners for decades. I was thinking that you would have used the Trex hidden fasteners on this. The way I run some outdoor walkways is by using different length planks with the ends randomly staggered rather than run a saw along the curves. It's an interesting look in a garden with 90 degree corners.

0:49 This is so important for preserving your energy on projects. Over the 35 years I have built outdoor fences and decks along with other structures I learned to minimize material handling. Working the material off the tailgate is a great tip. You can mix fence post concrete (FPC) directly off the tailgate. My back can't load, unload, transport 50lb bags to a "storage" spot on the ground only to pick it up again to mix it. I'll have a pallet delivered to a jobsite and tarp it overnight if needed. Any bags left over are taken back to the shop and put in stock.

4:43 Why not take out some energy on a rock that looks like that old high school P,E. teacher you never liked even though a simple lift with a shovel would have worked? lol Fun to watch April swing it!

Letting the big box stores load your truck is also a great idea. If I'm not having full pallets of fence post concrete delivered to my shop along with three units of redwood rails or fence planks I will have the youngsters load even a modest twenty bags of FPC. As wet as the big box stores sell their 4x4s I gladly let them handle it and bring them out to the front of the store where they load it for me.

I build with Trex brand and have since the early 1990s. The modern day Trex decking truly needs tighter spacing than 16" for people who weight over 180 lbs, which unfortunately for me is the case. Add a few friends who tip the scales along with high temperatures and the planks will "flex like Trex". I frame on 14" centers for all my straight Trex planks now and 12" on center for diagonal patterns per the Trex instructions.

So getting back to my original point I would have used one more stringer in each frame box. Often my extra framing is just scrap framing wood left over from previous projects so the only extra costs is perhaps a few dozen fasteners or hangers.

  5. April you are my shero. I love this. I am a woman who only wishes to be this handy. Bravo.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

  6. This looks amazing.. and when you smashed that rock up with the sledge, I was thinking a combination of "WOW, don't mess with this girl!" and "I wish I was that strong" lol Well done. You just blew that thing apart no problem.

  7. looks nice! 🥂🇨🇦
composite decking has its purpose but you should talk about its flaws as well, number 1 it gets hot super hot in the sun, way hotter than wood, like literally you got to hose it down if you want to walk barefoot on it,
    2) it's very soft and scratches and ages very quickly in my experience
    3) cost
it would have used Western red cedar instead personally ……but very nice how's it holding up?

  8. Untreated base wood..?? Wouldn't like to be you when you're ripping it all up in 12months when it starts rotting.
