Q&A – Is it safe to grow vegetables using moldy soil?

It is probably best to not use it. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says when she finds a moldy area in bagged soil, she does not use that part in the pot with the plant. Instead, she will either put the soil in the compost pile or use it in a low spot in her yard. Retired MSU Extension Horticulture Specialist Lelia Kelly says if ground soil is moldy, it means it is too wet in that location to grow vegetables.
