Garden Design Tips for Beginners

Ah! What would I have done differently in my own garden design if I went back in time? I thought this retrospective on my own garden might help new gardeners as they start planning their own garden rooms and garden spaces. Enjoy!

  1. I would put much more hard scape, less grass, and not put so much attention in the border of yard.Although we put in the bones of a yard first.Trees, shrubbery,( for the birds especially) and outlined shrubs for blooming throughout Summer to Fall.

  2. I’m in Annapolis on the water, zone 7a. We moved here to a property that had been uninhabited for many years…always mowed but not “gardened”. My property has so much potential but it’s a bit overwhelming right now. After watching your videos, I’m now thinking I’ll concentrate on vignettes and areas I can tackle over time. My biggest challenge is deer…there are literally herds of them and my property has been their “chomping” ground. I’d love to have many of those plants you feature but I will be focusing on deer resistant and natives plants to attempt to find some success. You are an inspiration!! Love your videos.

  3. Hi Linda I'm in n across the river from philladelphia my garden has changed so many times I could write a book it's a challenge now that I'm old.. yep old lol
If I were starting over I would do nothing but prepare the soil. I can't seem to figure that out. I want a zenLike look with many butterflies I would also

  4. Zone 5. I would calculate better the size of plants at maturity, particularly trees, those will be impossible to move

  5. Love love love this video! If you’re not a gardener then I don’t know who is! Your garden is magical and I’ve seen a lot of beautiful gardens!

  6. Linda, what is a "Potiche"? Would you please explain the meaning of Potiche?

  7. Love the plants growing at the top of your fence. They soften the hardness of the fence. How do you do that? Are they growing from the other side of your fence or in planters???

  8. I would plant a nice Maple 🍁 tree behind that wooden bench. Always love watching your show. And absolutely always in love with your outfits.

  9. Regarding the the resting bench area’s new life, consider a water feature. Something perhaps you could have the Pond Guy help you design and install. Your garden is lovely. I think the addition of trickling water would give it new life and a restorative effect.

  10. Linda, when you do a video on your fabulous garden boots, please let us know what type of socks work best with them. Thank you for what you and Stuart do!

  11. I live in zone 9 I have to plant in pots mine are on a concrete pad around my patio and parking space

  12. Hi Linda. Why didn't the river birch work out for you? I'm in South east Texas and I purchased a couple. I'm now a bit worried if they didn't work for you in Oklahoma!!

  13. I just subscribed in June of 2022 and I really enjoyed this. If I could start over I would add structure, structure, structure…..and YES-I want a green house….I am in the process of adding the structure that I think my home and garden need. Still trying to think about how regarding the green house. I really enjoy Claus Dalby.

  14. YOU ARE SO HUMBLE, LINDA THIS MAKES ALL OF US CLUMSY GARDENERS HAVE HOPE!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU LINDA!!!!!!! YOUR GARDEN HAS EVOLVED BEAUTIFULLY, IT IS VERY COZY!!!!!!!!!! AND PLEASE STOP BEING SO HARD ON YOURSELF, YOUR GARDEN 🪴 IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE JUST LIKE YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Living 50miles outside of Chicago and moved from my house on a pond to anew home with only two larger trees on the property. I am slowly adding shrubs. My favorite shrubs so far are hydrangia Annabelle. The first plants that I planted I actually rescued from someone's garbage after the Holidays. Four Alberta spruce trees which I took home and planted in large pots in a protected area. I then planted them into my yard( not yet garden) the following spring. You are my inspiration!!!

  16. We're kindred souls in so many ways love your style and spirit keep inspiring me you are the best !!!
