Growing Potatoes In Buckets | Container Gardening

Growing potatoes in buckets is one way to expand your container gardening skills. Our bucket garden gives us one more way to grow vegetables, and gives us control over the soil and the amendments we use. Our container gardening secret super soil mix is what we use in a potato bucket and many of our other container garden vegetable buckets. They are drilled for drainage, but in a way that allows also for use as self wicking buckets or self watering buckets. In the past, we have typically grown Kennebec potatoes from seed potatoes. Today, we will be planting organic store bought potatoes that had grown eyes and could not be used for cooking. This is not how we normally do it, but we are willing to dive into this growing experiment… Come along !

  1. I'm doing a bucket of potatoes. This is my first time. I didn't use the whole potatoes. I cut them up, with eyes growing. They have grown 3 feet out of the tops of the 5 gallon bucket. When do you know they should be harvested?

  2. Can't wait to see what you get😀 Our 1st time planting potatoes at the old place I think we dug about a foot and a half deep to cover the whole thing (hairy/spindles). Hilled twice and did good. Didn't know they didn't have to be buried all the way🤔😆

  3. I just planted some in truck tires and some in 12 inch pots. Will find out how they do this fall. Blessings to you and your family, Tina and Mark!

  4. Hello Mark and Tina hope y'all are doing well. Can't wait to see how the potatoes grow and try next year what I learn from y'all. Stay safe sending prayers 🙏 and God's blessings. Much love and big tx hugs from South Tx.

  5. Operation "Hairy Potatoes "… No hairy potato left behind!!!! Hahaha!!!
Thanks for sharing and smiles. Many blessing on you two.

  6. The jury may be out, on as good of production from store bought super market grade food, used for seed. My potatoes grown from store bought are growing, but few and tiny leaves on main stems over 16"s tall?
Am in my 4th year growing in tubs, 10 gallon, never seen this before. Theory is, food grade is sprayed for preservation, longer shelf life, unless they are "True Organic".
I was goina ask your opinion and low and behold, a video on hairy super market potatoes!!
    Still would like your opinion.
    TFS, stay safe and well
    Mark

  7. I’ll be waiting to see how your hairy potato experiment turns out. I have my potatoes planted in 20 gallon tubs. Good luck to both of us !😀

  8. I love new potatoes cooked with green peas in a cream sauce.. cook the potatoes until just getting tender and add peas , drain and make a cream sauce and bring it just until heated through.. I also love them cooked with green beans with bacon fat for seasoning.. not a lot, just about a tbsp..

  9. Looking forward to this one. Will look for your other potato bucket video. Getting ready to do the same here.

  10. We grow purple ones. Just one in with 1 or 2 eyes in and cover a little, when see green cover. Keep doing that until filled to the top. You get pretty good yealed

  11. I had to laugh as I've found and planted Hairy Potatoes as well. In fact I was so busy that fall that I almost didn't get them dug up. Boy was I surprised by all the Potatoes we had! Big, small and everything in between. My kids helped me to plant as I didn't plan on these being planted they went I to a freshly cleared area just for them and very little in the way of soil prep. My 6 year old wanted to do it her way to see what would happen and she buried some of those long eyes length ways. They sent out shoots and buds and grew baby taters all along the way. Talk about a happy kid! Good memories of "Hairy Potatoes ".

  12. I planted my Red Norland seed potatoes in a 30-gallon container this weekend. This is my first time growing potatoes.
I can't wait to see yours and my harvest.

  13. Hmmm. I always plant mine longest hairiness down. I also put mine only on 1" soil & keep adding around every set of leaves always leaving a pair above my soil. Have fun with the experiment.

  14. It will be interesting to see the results. Potatoes are grown commercially in this area of Washington. Russets aren’t my favorites, except as French fries. I love steamed tiny red potatoes with butter and Yukon Gold for potato salad.
Our neighbor, Dave, sells liquid organic fertilizers to local farms. Dave was given a bin of 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch diameter red potatoes that were too big for his customer’s niche tiny potatoes market (they sell for $1.99-$3.99 per pound at the grocery store). Dave gave potatoes to everyone he knew and passed on a big box full to us. We shared with family and friends and we’ve eaten lots of tiny red potato salad and fried potatoes and steamed potatoes this spring. I leave the tender skins on.

  15. This will be an interesting series. Cool salvage on your hairy potatoes. Can’t beat those little potatoes in a dish with creamed peas. Y’all stay safe!

  16. I have in my life seen such hairy potatoes.!!! I am just like everyone else, having a blast watch u guys with your bucket garden. I just put out 6 bags myself. 3 were yukon gold seed potatoes and the other 3 were what I thought to be hairy potatoes I found in my bin, until I saw what REAL hairy potatoes are supposed to look like on your video. Yall be safe.

  17. Doing mine in self wicking containers. We'll see how they turn out. I used your soil recipe as a basis. I used beer cans for my wicking containers. We can't recycle because of the shutdown (stupid!) so it was a great use for them.

  18. Gigglez for T today. My son was scared for life with hairy taters. Ever see a 12 y.o. dance a ballet while wiping like a pup? Oh my he was creeped out!
I always chit my taters that way & grow in Rubber Maid trash can ( limited space here ).

  19. Sure is a good video. I've been thinking about growing some potatoes in a bucket. The worse thing that could happen is you grow a 100 pounds of potatoes. Have a great day.

  20. Hey y'all! My daughter cut red taters and yellow taters up in pieces and planted em in a castle feed bucket, it's blue.. she covers it up with soil out from the pasture the cows been running in. And down here in South East Texas the dirt isn't that great. But, those things grew wild! Idkw she got the idea of cutting em into pieces but she had two buckets and potatoes to last the yr for them. A family of big eaters and five of em. It worked. She didn't know when to dig em out, so had to tell her how me and my Dad did it. I was really proud of her. This year they did a big garden. With rabbit poo and cow mix. That dirt looks great for growing. Can't wait to see what she gets out of her garden. They grow thier own beef, rabbits, chickens etc. And they're just on 10 acres. She's got her Grandma's green thumb.
I thought y'all would find that grow way really interesting.
    Y'all stay well, take care.

  21. Loved the hairy potato rescue mission!! You guys always put a smile on my face! Thank you so much for the mention, it truly means more than words can express. I bet those potatoes will do great and you will have a great harvest, so exciting!! Big hugs to you both 🤗

  22. Shutdown has me planting tons of stuff this year. I planted red potatoes for the first time in buckets. Really hoping they do well. I put only one seed potato in each bucket. Wish the POA would let me till the yard.

  23. This will be interesting to see. I have done that before, forgetting about potatoes & then they sprout. I’ll be watching, now that I’m back. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🙏🇺🇸👍❤️🥰🙏

  24. I planted 4 sweet potatoes in 2 buckets, to try. But my sweet potatoes don't have long stems on them. I put enough mud to cover the potatoes with the mud but the buckets don't have as much mud in them as yours does. Should I have covered the potatoes with more mud and covered the hairs of the potatoes or what?

  25. I enjoyed your video, even got a few laughs,I put my potatoes in two weeks ago in fish crates ,some of the potatoes and up,through the ground, carrots, onions, beet are all doing well, this is my first year trying the super soil mix, except the potatoes,I use 6-12-12 fertelizer on the spuds.thanks for the information, stay safe.

  26. Interesting to know what I can do with all those potatoes I usually throw away… Did you make a video showing how they turned out in the end? I would be very interested to know. Thank you (Now I am going to watch your other video) Blessings to you both

  27. I watched the videos of you making your super soil from a year or so ago and the video of you making your container soil. Do you use the container soil for all of the vegetables that you grow?
