  1. Great video… thanks for sharing!!! I'm going to start lookig for buckets… we have some stores that may make them available. Take Care, Candy 🙂

  2. I like this system… Can I copy/borrow the idea… I could make this work on my off grid set up. I am planning some close in gardens that could benefit from this system.did not want to just poach your idea…lol.

  3. Thank you for asking. You are more than welcome to use any or all of this system. I put this information on YouTube so people will learn and can use it.

  4. hi. the potting soil mix that can be reused over and over again: does that also count for potatoes? I heard that u can't use the same soil for potatoes twice in a row.

  5. I think this is the system I will be using in the sun porch winter garden at our new homestead when we have the place built. I may, also adapt it for use in the greenhouse we'll be building later. If I paint the buckets black (or find black ones to use) it will help warm the soil in cooler weather for an earlier start or later end, extending my season. Great videos on this subject, as always. Thanks.

  6. Thank you for commenting. Yes, I know Larry's system. It is wonderful. He and I have corresponded about gardening and our desire to help others enjoy it and be blessed by it. Each method has its advantages. Find the one that works for you and enjoy gardening.

  7. The main reason people talk about crop rotation is due to lack of nutrients in the soil which can promote disease or pests. By adding organic fertilizer and minerals you can use the same soil for the same plants year after year with no rotation.

  8. I've really enjoyed watching your off-grid self-watering container videos. I may have missed the one that shows details on the float valve and grommets. Also, what happens with the buckets when it rains? I was concerned they might float the materials out as the lids are off. Thanks again for the great informative videos!

  9. Thanks for watching. To view the grommet video search for "Made Easy" on my channel. I have been using wood chips for almost a year now. They have been in heavy rains. So far they haven't floated away. We'll see with this in the buckets. If they do I'll let you know.

  10. Like the video. Good job and best of luck on your fall harvest. I am doing something similar, but using Larry Hall's rain gutters as my garden will be huge once I finally get done milking buckets from my local grocers.

  11. Everyone gives that same answer, but nobody explains what kind of organic fertilizers or minerals to put in the soil. Do they mean horse manure?

  12. I state clearly not to use horse manure or any type of manure. I use MicroLife organic fertilizer and recommend that.

  13. I make my own wine and get the 5 gallon buckets of juice from a winery. Nice thing that can be done 100% off grid and I have more buckets than I know what to do with after a few years of that.

  14. I think you left out the most basic thing… Do you have a bucket inside a bucket, and is that to facilitate water drain-off? Also, I don't understand why they're connected or how this is self-watering without any water pump connected to circulate water. Why is this set-up better than anything else? Thanks!

  15. This is one video in the video series. Please watch the other "off-grid self-watering" videos for more info and full details.

  16. Good compost is great in the garden. Lots of folks make compost from manure, leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, etc.
As far as other organic stuff you can add to your garden: blood meal, bone meal, kelp meal, wood ashes, fish emulsion, alfalfa meal, greensand, rock dust, lime, etc., etc.

  17. I got some 15 liter buckets from a bakery and 2 inch Round Orchid/Hydroponics Slotted Mesh Net Pots…..my question is are the net pots to small for the 15 liter (3.2 gallon) bucket? Thanks

  18. my troll buddies got pretty offended for some reason when i played it, while it was funny as all hell i had no idea why

  19. Grrr…ran out of characters…hehe: Crappy days I have a white plastic bag over them, so they still get the light but are not blown to bits some days till summer. So far my gardening habits are working well…(oops…forgot to get my cucumber and other seedlings…but my buckets are cleaned, new potting soil in, and ready for the next round…)…oh well the gardening habits are normally good when my memory serves me the way it should…lol.

  20. What do you initially wash the buckets with? Can you use soap? Thanks for all your great videos. We're excited to do this soon!

  21. My best source for free 5 gal. buckets is Dunkin' Donuts.

I use two buckets per grow system. The bottom is the reservoir, top for growing. I connected 12 reserviors with 1/2" tubes so I only need to fill the last uncovered one. It fills all as they seek the same level. The reservoirs transfer water by a 3/4" wick. I bought a rope and cut it into 20" lengths. The pots are watered, but I think my nylon/polyester rope was treated with a chemical that kill microbes because my plants died or are stunted. I am going to try a cotton rope.

The other possibility (10%) is my potting soil was dead. I plan to change to Wonder Soil + mature biochar.
