Japanese Garden

The Gardens of Kyoto Japan – Tofukuji | Our Japanese Garden Escape

The Tofukuji Buddhist temple houses the famous Hojo garden, also known as Hasso-no-niwa garden. At the temple entrance is the Sanmon gate, built in 1425. The gate is 22 meters tall and is the oldest Zen gate in Japan. The 100 meter long roofed Tsutenkyo bridge is another famous landmark of Tofukuji. The temple was one the five principal Buddhist temples and consists of several temple buildings. The Hojo garden is built around the Hojo temple building, which used to be the residence of the head monk. The garden was designed in 1939 by the Japanese garden designer Mirei Shigemori and consists of four different Zen gardens, one located at each side of the Hojo temple building. This garden is unique in that it mixes traditional and modern garden styles.

  1. I enjoyed the video and explanations, thank you! May I ask at what time of year did you visit the temple and gardens? I wonder if the moss was on peak season or holding its shape for the summer.
