We had to take care of this around our Homestead ๐Ÿช“๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿก๐ŸŒป๐Ÿ”ฅ

Before Dan and I continue building our Homestead in North Portugal, we must tie up some loose ends. We have a huge list of 10 minutes jobs that need to be taken care of around the Homestead. By wrapping those, we can better assess what material we have left and be in top shape to start working inside next week. In this video, we’re also talking about our next projects around the farm and how inflation is forcing us to put some things around the homestead on the back burner ๐Ÿ™

37 weeks ago, we bought an abandoned farm in Tras-os-montes, North Portugal, and we’re building our dream house with a public garden, an ice cream kiosk, and our dream house optimized toward minimalist yet comfortable living. But we’re not just building a house – we’re bringing back to life an entire Portuguese Homestead and working on being self-sufficient.

We left the Rat trace for a simple life in North Portugal. And this is a slice of our dream and a new simple life. Follow us on Facebook:

  1. What I did with a big bag was turn it into a raised bed. I made a circle of thin sticks and wove round and round to hide the bag inside and then filled the bag halfway with twigs and then topped it with soil. The woven sides of the circular raised bed looked very nice and you could utilise the small stuff from the chestnut tree harvest, hope this helps. Best of all, no cost.

  2. the bigbags are great for storing DRY hay, kindling (small sticks etc) for the winter, also if you do mulching yourself it can be used where you chop it and then move it to where you need it (just be careful how heavy they get) put them on a wagon if you need to transport them and you fill them a lot

  3. you guys inspire all the time not only to do some jobs ourself but also as a couple, the joy of creating something together.

  4. Itโ€™s a shame you have to put the glamming site on hold as this would have created an income for youโ€ฆโ€ฆ..hopefully the chaos in the world might settle down and prices stabilizeโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ

  5. Do you have a sewing machine? If so, you could cut up and sew the bags together to make a tarp to cover your wood piles. Or a wind break for the chicken coop?

  6. Dear friends, I follow you since the very beginning and kind of awaiting Sunday for a new interesting step in the journey you share with us. I like you guys and wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart. That's why I hope you will accept my "complaint" with a positive spirit : sometimes you have a sound continuity problem in the video. Either it is too low and suddenly too high or the opposite. The music is too high for the level of talking sound. It may be a question of distance to the camera…Best wishes and love , Dorit

  7. I grow all my veggies in those big bags and use them as raised beds in a no-dig style. Lower part I fill with local dirt and top 15 cm with compost. Every year a new layer of 2 or 3 cm compost is needed. The 1 m3 bags I backfold once. As the bags get wrinkles and want to sag out it's not very visually appealing but they are for free and the veggies don't mind. Oldest bags are now 7 yrs old and are still in one piece.

  8. Hi guys another great video, im sure with rainy season coming you will find loads of uses for the bulk bags, joining them up to cover wood etc they would make good raised beds for root vegetable, or compost bins, do they hold water? maybe use some for rainwater catchment ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€ and maybe the supplier will take them back so they can reuse them, if they are in good condition, im sure you will find a use for them ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘โคโค

  11. Please don't use the big bags in your garden. Micro plastics will go into your soil, no way to get it out… ๐Ÿ™„

  12. Hazel โ˜˜๏ธ โ€ฆ
The bags make great planters especially for potatoes โ€ฆ you can roll them down as far as you desire for other veggies โ€ฆ

Also cut them down to use as underlay for gravel to prevent weeds ?

    List Iโ€™d โ€œ10 minuteโ€ jobs โ€ฆ good one !
    ๐Ÿ™โ˜˜๏ธ๐Ÿ˜˜

  13. AWWW the kitties are so cute! The lights look awesome! almost like Christmas! Another great video, the ducks are adorable too can't wait to see the rabbits and a puppy in a few months.๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿค๐Ÿฆ†๐ŸŒป๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿฆฎ

  14. Property is looking great. Wth the lights, the house stands out and now you don't have to fumble outside at night๐Ÿ˜. Happy for you.

  15. I lined the sides and tops of my raised beds with cut up rubble bags to protect the wood , stapled it on 4th year now their still all good ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  16. Hello. love watching u at work. I thought you were doing the whole road right down to your beautiful house??

  17. Your the hardest working couple on YouTube. You have accomplished in 6 months what has taken other channels years. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™

  18. Thanks for your vid ๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ’Ÿ๐Ÿ’Ÿ๐Ÿ’Ÿ Love you guys, maybe use this building backs for raised garden beds and put them in front of your house and put your vegetables there it grows very good in there with some old droppings of your animals and worms and old wood scraps on the bottom and ground, than you can keep an eye on it went you drink your coffee in the morning and keep it moisture.

  19. โ“โ“โ“Might you consider getting clip-on mics? It is difficult to hear about 95% of your conversations. They would also help blocking the wind sound.

  20. The build is looking fantastic. It's a shame about the lumber costs! In the USA, the inflation is driven by price gouging. Corporations are posting record profits but still raising prices. I can give you two big examples, our gas companies and our chain grocers.

  21. maybe someone in town would trade something for some of the big bags or have a sewing machine you could borrow? is there a craigslist type site in Portugal that you could trade bags for some other garden or building materials, or get a good deal on a sewing machine?

  22. A wide veranda would suit your house well although I realize wood became so expensive. Maybe you should investigate a solid floor veranda "stoep" covered with the same slate as your road and look at only wood pillars to keep the roof๐Ÿ™ˆ

  23. It looks like you have the sticker still on your windows. They will get baked on if you donโ€™t get them off fairly soon. I enjoy your video.

  24. Hello Sindy and Dan, Don't you love it when all those small jobs are done ! So all your lovely animals are learning how to be "stars" The Byz are just gorgeous and as for Tony, well he gets taller everytime I see him. Oh My the Stevies are just so sweet, they look as though they have settled into their home. Ducks and Chickens seem happy enough, have you had any eggs yet? Great suggestions for use of bags. Are you going to cover your wood pile? Gosh the cost of building materials have sure gone up. It changes everything that you do. I love the outdoor lights on the front of the cottage. Thank you for all the info on the red crayfish,I had no idea they were a problem. I have now read up on them. Crayfish over this side of the world are very much sort after for eating (sea and fresh water) So next week its indoors, look forward to it. So stay strong, work hard, and love each other always. Until next week, I will sew, knit, take care of those in need and be kind.

  25. I understand the audio problem you are having but please continue on as you are doing. Your husband is soft spoken and you my dear I love that powerful voice you have! I just became a subscriber and I am so excited to follow your journey. Blessings to you both, your home, and all your projects.
