We Finally have UGU PODS!! Where to Buy Ugu Seeds In The USA #UgufarmingTips #Zone9aGardening

I have finally spotted female Ugu flowers and pods in my garden! If you have wondered how the female Ugu flower and young Ugu pods look like, let me show you.

Nothing has been more challenging to me to figure out like growing the Fluted Pumpkin in my zone 9a backyard garden!

The Fluted Pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) is a culturally meaningful plant to many tribes in west Africa cultivated for its edible nutritious leaves and seeds. It is the star vegetable used in cooking Edikaikong. Other names for this tropical vine are Ugu, Ugwu, Okong-obong, ikong ubong. It is indigenous to southern Nigeria.

Included in this video:
how long it takes for the Ugu female flowers to form
why it can take so long to get female flowers
how to differentiate between male and female Ugu
where to buy Ugu seeds in the USA
what it means by the Ugu plant is dioecious
What I plan to do so the pods survive winter

Yaje’s African Garden & Allotment is about growing culturally meaningful African vegetables. I have been pushing the zone and growing African vegetables in my Texas (Zone 9a) garden for more than 20 years.

My mission is help 100,000 people start a garden in their backyard or balcony and enjoy the health and happiness that comes along with turning the soil.

I grow Bitterleaf, Okra, Anchia, Garden eggs, Garden huckleberry (njama njama), Fluted pumpkin (Ugu or okong obong), various pepper varieties, corn and so much more in my garden.
