Bill, his daughter, and granddaughter shared a summer project—a family garden that’s featured in the Summer 2017 issue of Garden Design.

Bill shares some lessons learned, and here are a few:
—Grow edibles that are hard to find in local markets—such as Armenian cucumber and watermelon radish.
.
—Check with a local nursery about whether it’s best to start with seedlings or seeds. Seedlings may not save you time. Plants that you start from seed often catch up and develop better root systems.
.
—Grow anything that you want handy—such as basil, parsley, or other herbs.
