Japanese Garden

The 15th Century Japanese Ink Painter's Garden Tour

In this video, we are taking a look at Sesshu Garden located in Yamaguchi city, Yamaguchi prefecture. Known as the Kyoto of the West during the Muromachi period, Yamaguchi was the domain of the powerful Ouchi family. Patrons of the art, the Ouchi commissioned Toyo Sesshu to design a garden for the second residence of Ouchi Masahiro.
Following the death of his mother, Masahiro dedicated his second residence to her and thus the house became a temple. While the temple has changed names and hands throughout the years, Sesshu’s 600 year old garden remains in tact and is available all year around for visitors to enjoy. In addition to Sesshu’s garden, the main hall or Hondo hosts events throughout the year and houses many of Sesshu’s works on display for everyone to enjoy. #japanesegardens

  1. Thank you so much for posting. Yamaguchi seems like a wonderful place to visit. I'll be sure to check out Jyoei-ji temple if I am able. Japanese gardens are wonderful!
