How To Start Gardening With Jane Moore | STIHL Gardening Tips For Beginners | STIHL GB

Want to make your garden look beautiful but not sure where to start? Don’t worry because in this video, professional gardener, Jane Moore shows you 10 of the simplest things you can do to make your garden look great this summer.

🔶 Sketching the Garden
Sketching out your garden is a great place to start, picking out a few spots for a flower border or vegetable bed. Be sure to consider what parts of your garden are sunny and shady as you’ll need to consider when you choose your plants.

🔶 Read The Label
Local garden centres are great for getting advice, but labels will also give you a lot of information such as hardiness, flowering time, when to prune and the type of soil they need.

🔶 Prepare Your Garden Beds
Begin preparations by taking off the top layer of turf and digging over the area, removing any weeds or roots you find. It’s worth adding in a bit of garden compost or soil conditioner to add substance to your new garden bed. You only need to dig over a spade or fork’s depth to crumble up the soil a bit.

An easier way to make a garden bed is to spread newspaper or cardboard across the ground and top it with compost or manure. It will take a while but it’s much easier than digging.

🔶 Choosing Plants
With hundreds of plant varieties to choose from it’s hard to know what plants to choose! Visiting your local garden centre is a great way to get advice and take a good look at the plants. Make sure plants are bushy, lush looking and have firm leaves. If in doubt, you can carefully upend the plant to check the roots look healthy and are nicely spread.

🔶 5 Easy Perennials To Grow
Perennials are plants that die back every winter but grow again in the spring, year after year. Easy to grow perennials include:
– Stachys Lanata (Lamb’s ears)
– Asters
– Nepeta
– Geranium Rozanne
– Verbena Bonariensis

🔶 How To Plant A Plant
Start by reading the label and think about the position of the plant. For example, will it get enough sun? When planting trees or shrubs it’s important to consider the space they need to grow out. Dig your hole deep enough so that the crown is at the right level. Next, unpot the plant and tease out any roots that might be going around and around using your fingers before you plant. Finish off by placing the plant in the ground and filling in the soil – not forgetting to give it a good water to settle the roots in.

🔶 Watering Tips
It’s always best to water plants in the evening or at night using a timer switch as plants sweat during the day. This means they lose water from their leaves whilst trying to keep cool. Watering at night means the water stays by the roots.

🔶 Easy Plants To Get Started With
– Cosmos
– Geraniums
– Osteospermums
– Nemesia
– Bacopa
– Calendulas
– Violas
– Sunflowers

🔶 Easy To Grow Vegetables
– Radishes
– Courgettes
– Tomatoes
– Beetroot
– Lettuces

🔶 Sowing Seed In The Ground
Sowing seeds into the ground is easy but they are more prone to weather and pests, so it’s important to take time to get the soil just right. Break up any lumps of soil, remove stones and rake the soil over lightly until it becomes a fine bread crumb texture.

You can use the back of the rake to dig out a groove for the seeds. Consider the size of the seed you’re sowing as larger ones will need a deeper groove. If the soil is dry, water before sowing and refer to the seed packet for information on how far apart to plant the seeds. Once you’ve finished sowing, rake over the groove to cover the seeds and pat the soil into place.

🔶 Growing Flowers & Vegetables in Plant Pots
Plants that are growing in pots are easy to grow and are generally safer from pests but they need a lot of water and nutrients, especially fast-growing plants. To grow plants throughout the summer, we’d recommend a plastic, terracotta or glazed plant pot 45cm (or 18”) wide and deep as a minimum.
