Louvered Pergola

Shoulder Drop – Heavy Sigh . . .Yep, total relaxation in an outdoor living space. Hey . . . that’s probably why we called this video: Relaxation Backyard Transformation | How to Create a Landscape to LIVE IN. Okay that is a pretty corny way to start a description of this video, but why not? It is a perfect illustration of this astonishing landscape before and after.

The homeowners wanted a family-room of sorts 2 steps out the backdoor. Voila, this landscape design plan is just that. From inside to outside with the opening of a door. Oh, but there is so much more. Tucked in a lush natures-scape of plantings they created their dream backyard.

Their unique louvered pergola is an outdoor structure ‘smarter’ than Portland’s temperamental up-down weather. The push-button louvered ceiling when open allows loads of warmth and sunlight. Too much sun later in the day for small kids or grannies, close the louvered panels. Or if in the midst of a family gathering when rain sprinkles threaten or a quick downpour occurs, again, close the louvered panels. Not only is this louvered roof system functional to the max, it’s beautifully made to last for years while being a stand-out feature in backyard landscaping ideas. By the way, the pergola has gutters to move water elsewhere . . . another nifty feature. This particular pergola was manufactured in Florida, however, there are many styles available so check on-line for best features for your area of the country. (or see links in video)

Hot-Tub & Sauna are fraternal twins in this landscape design. Both are great ways to relax and have excellent health bennies. Use one every other day or… both in the same day – they can be visited vice-versa, in one and then the other next. Guess it’s up to the soaker or the sweat-er! (It is absolutely normal not to sweat initially when you start using a sauna. Usually after about a week you will be a-sweatin’) See how the ‘Outdoor Living Guy’ introduces the hot tub and sauna and his ideas for backyard landscaping.

This little Shangri-La shows-off a tandem wall with capped seating area. Smart design choice – taking a sloped backyard and creating structure as well as a destination spot. Retaining walls often duo as seat walls and this landscape also boasts a concrete wall stairway into the lawn and garden. Although a pathway to the garden is also available as you enter the backyard, having more than one entry makes lawn games and access to this lush setting even handier. The Outdoor Living guy also gives a big thumbs up to garden beds. Get back to your roots… yep, pun intended.

Seriously though, yard games are so fun. What happened to lawn games & yard activities? Okay, not every adult is going to play ‘hide & seek’ – however, bocce balls, horseshoes, crochet, corn hole, Giant Jenga . . . these are get-off-your-bottom-&-move kinda games and we all love ‘em. Lawns like this property now has after it’s makeover – bring yard games back to the 2020’s!

“Put a water fountain in it” is another landscaping idea for backyards that our Cool Homeowners wanted in their landscape design. Nestled near the dining area, the subtle melody of dancing water soothes & serenades. Is it any wonder their guests relax and unwind?

As the video closes, the focus is on the front yard landscape design and the fabulous steps to the front door. The pathway to the backyard has undergone a remarkable improvement as well and might give you some landscaping ideas for front yards you may not have thought of.

  1. Micah is there a reason why people don't put spa's undercover? Would it be ok to have one under a pergola or with a roof overhead? thanks from Australia.. I love how your transformed yard and how everything has a defined area that flows together.

  2. Hi I've seen all your videos every time you post. I'm really interested seeing what your version would be for my backyard. I'm located in New York,Long Island. Is there any way you can possibly design my backyard and give me a quote for you work?

  3. The pocket garden in front of the wall is a really nice touch. It's almost like they have two back yards now.
