How to Landscape Rocks around House
A rock garden, also known as an alpine garden or a rockery is a small plot of land that is decorated with stones, boulders and rocks, arranged in a way that allows for small plants to be planted among the rocks.
Rock gardens can be used as a lawn substitute or just as a small space. They can add depth and dimension to a flat, boring landscape and serve as a low-maintenance, year-round focal point. But a good rock garden is by no means achieved by merely putting stones, soil, and plants together.
How to Build a Rock Garden
– Clear off a section of land.
– The first step to building your stone garden is to make some space for it within your lawn or yard.
– Plot Your Design.
– Choose Your Rocks and Lay Down the First Layer.
– Add in the Soil.
– Lay Down the Second Layer of Rocks.
– Planting the Plants.
A good rock garden soil mixture consists of approximately equal parts good quality topsoil, fine pebbles or gravel and peat moss or leaf mold. You can add a small amount of compost or manure, but use organic materials sparingly. As a general rule, rich soil isn’t suitable for most rock garden plants
For a more natural appearance, face the rocks the same direction they were facing in their original location. Arrange smaller rocks around larger ones so they appear natural. If your backyard rock garden is on a slope, place larger rocks or boulders towards the bottom of the garden.
Before planting, combine small rocks, a layer of sand (use a few inches) and a layer of a lean topsoil. The top layer of soil should have some peat and small lava rock mixed in. You don’t want to use a rich nutrient rich soil with lots of compost because rock garden plant like it lean and mean.
Select large stones to act as ‘keystones’.
Use a spade to dig out hollows to set the stone into.
A crowbar will help move the stones into their permanent positions.
Aim for a naturalistic look when setting the rock in place.
