When to Overwinter Exotic Garden Plants

Today’s video is about when when to begin overwintering, wrapping, protecting, mulching & bringing in exotic and tropical style garden plants. A lot of the plants including bamboos & Trachycarpus palms I talk about are hardy, others like tree ferns and feather palms need some degree of winter protection whereas some have to come inside as houseplants before the first frosts. I’ve done specific plant overwintering guides for Tetrapanax, Dicksonia antartica tree ferns etc. but in this video I give an overview of when I do this and the factors that might affect this for your garden. As always, just leave a comment if you’ve got any other questions.

  1. Thanks for taking the time to do another great informative video! Always clear and easy to understand especially for me as a beginner going into her first Winter.
I'm feeling prepared and living where I do, am confident I can delay until early November! My question is, what's the best way to treat my trunkless tree fern over Winter that is small and has been thriving with big fronds since the Spring? Not sure whether to treat it like a fern with Trunk or whether to disturb and lift? Thanks George

  2. Thanks George excellent content again, I guess I'm lucky that I live ten mins from you hehe

  3. Great video and advice George! I'm hoping to push most of my plants as long as possible this year like I did last year.

  4. Hello george . A very educational blogg. Ive taken it on board, thanks. Just one question about tree ferns. Ive never lost any yet , and usually cover crown in hay rather than straw. What do you think is best too use?- straw, hay, fleece or dead leaves?. Thanks mate. Regards. Steve.👍🌴

  5. The video was great mate. Superb advice forthe exotic-style gardener👏👏. My particular favourite parts were the written text pieces summarising each of the three types of plants and their overwintering requirements. This was mainly though because of the tear-inducing emotional music chosen which was a classy touch. 🤣👍

  6. Hi george great videos and advice after watching your videos I have recently bought my first 3 x 12 to 18 inch tall potted musa bajoo am I best putting them in my unheated greenhouse for winter and do I need to protect them with fleece and how dry should I keep them thanks

  7. Hi George
Thank you for a brilliant video, I’m A newbie was just wondering about some advice on my butia capitata (it’s my Pride and joy) it’s 8/9 foot tall it’s still in the pot that it came in. Was just wondering if you could give me some advice on winter care as it’s to big to bring into the house. I live In ollerton Outside newark
    Thanks

  8. Brilliant video, thanks George. Is there a preferred time to remove musa basjoo pups? I have been waiting till they have got a bit more substantial but now not sure if it is the wrong time of year to split them away.

  9. Up here in Shropshire we got down to 3 degrees about 3 weeks ago, but the oldest it has been since is about 7. Young ensete murieli lifted but in a pot in the unheated greenhouse, will try and bring it into the house in the next few weeks. Colocasias already in the house. Cannas …..Will wait until the foliage gets caught then bring in and dry. I may try some left in the ground and mulched thickly. Dahlias and tracycarpus amongst others will take their chances!

  10. Indeed, here in N. Florida the hard frosts may happen last of December to middle of February, they may last a couple of days to a week, then back up to warm weather where the plants really start to recover and set those new banana leaves. Everything looks pathetic but really comes back fast…some palms n ferns will go into the garage for a few days…my main plan is to clear out the garage for an easy space to cram them all in and to get more mulch…

  11. Thanks George, was just thinking when to start my overwintering, now I have a good idea after watching your video.

  12. Colossal job you did writing down, naming and sorting theses three groups of plants!
I still don't know exactly how I will handle the Rhus lancea and the Schinus molle (not a big deal actually, as they are
under 6 feet high for the moment), but for sure, the Chamaerops humilis 'Vulcano' and the Mahonia eurybracteata
'Soft caress' will have a safe fresh winter on the terrace… George, thank you for this very documented video. All the best!💚

  13. Great video as always. This is my first year with my tropical garden. My musa basjoo plants have loads of babies round the bottom. What should I do with these? Should they just be left or should I try and separate them? Will they survive the winter? I’m in North Devon

  14. hi George do you have a musa sikkimensis? I've read that their fairly hardy and just interested to see if you leave it in the garden protected or you dig it up cheers

  15. Thanks once again for the great and informative video, quick question I recently cut about 8 leaves off my ensete still had 6 on though we are forecast a week of rain will it be okay I don't want the wet to cause it to rot.

I was trying to cut the leaves off ready for overwintering in the house when the weather does turn.

  16. Great vid George as always. Interesting that you say the RHS is conservative in its hardiness ratings? What makes you say that, is this a commonly held belief?
