If you have plants that climb, scramble, or twist through your garden, chances are they’re growing on a trellis! There are many options for trellis materials, shapes, and sizes. If you want a low-cost, DIY version, bamboo stakes are a great place to start, you can even grow your own!. You will need to use stronger materials such as hardwood or steel stakes for large, heavy plants though.

Think about what you’re trying to support – how the stems and leaves will fit through the gaps, and what type of growth you want to encourage, such as a dense screen, simple upright support, or training a plant to reach a particular area.

Fan trellis:
This shape is ideal for light, ornamental climbers for both horizontal and vertical growth. It will encourage plants to be top-heavy, so you need to secure the base well. They are also great for corner spaces.

Rectangular trellis:
A flat rectangular shape is perfect for up against a wall or as a screen. You can add more stakes to increase the density.

Box trellis:
As the name suggests, this shape forms a box or cage around a plant. Ideal for beans, peas, and indeterminate tomatoes. The plant will be somewhat contained whilst fruit can spill over the sides.

Tino cuts stakes to size and simply ties them together at the join points with a clove hitch or basic lashing knot.
The best thing about a bamboo trellis is you can always untie the string and repurpose the materials into a new shape.
