A Look Back at this Year's Winning Artist | Landscape Artist of the Year | All Homes

Manchester Art Gallery
The victor of the 2022 competition expresses their artistic prowess through capturing a spectacular location in paint.

Stephen Mangan and Joan Bakewell hunt for the country’s best landscape artist.
It is a nationwide search to find the best landscape artist. Filmed at picturesque locations around the UK, contestants paint some of the UK’s most spectacular scenery for a chance to win a £10,000 commission for the National Trust’s permanent collection. Through several rounds, winners are selected to advance to the semi-final, and then to the final. Judging the competition are British art historian Kate Bryan, and a variety of experts from the art world.

  1. I'm a bit confused by the finished product. Why the fire? Where's the canal?

  2. She did an excellent and creative job. Very unexpected to include the fire. Where did she get that color pallet dress?

  3. The resulting painting is awful in my opinion. How the fire depiction relates to the brief, I do not understand. The painting perhaps an abstraction of landscape prior to its scraping by the canal.

  4. Loved it and got it! The factory fire devastating for the mill families, the softest of pallets and the houses following the canal. Of a bygone industry well done.

  5. I'm sorry.. not feeling it, whatever it is. Even as nebulous as it is, it's not as bad as some of the other landscape "winners"

  6. I'm very thankful to have this program… so don't take me wrong.. I think they set her up for failure with an overwhelming brief.. These artists who win the final commissions need a little more of a narrow focus.. It's ridiculous what they expect them to accomplish . That said I was disappointed in this final piece.. But then I believe they chose the wrong artist. She may have achieved something if she had narrowed her focus ..

  7. Wow
    It is beautiful painting
She is excellent master artist I think

  8. The flaming mill is completely on-brief. The canal brought employment, including boat workers and millworkers. We learned the mills exploited families, who were stuck there. That particular mill burned in the 90s IIRC, and they didn't choose to fix it after the fire. It's a symbolic. I think they expected her to do the canal basin downtown – old juxtaposed against new etc. That's where I thought she'd go, too, but I'm well pleased with her landscape.

  9. Alicia is very talented. She's young and already paints as if she was an old master. Congrats 👏🎉. She deserves honour award.

  10. I think the mill should be rebuilt as a place artists could live and work. They could help rebuild this area.

  11. Alicia's work is not only cinematic, it's poetic in her Turneresque style, wonderful young artist, and well deserving of LAOTY.

  12. then i watched this competition from the very beginning i chose one artist which i wanted to win…it was Alicia…every time she draw a picture i kept my breathing waiting her to win and continue…i'm so proud of her, wishing to her a BIG BIG BIG FUTURE
