Update on the 'Odd Job' Customer – What did I end up doing?

This is an update on a video I did whereby I got myself into a situation with a customer that I didn’t like. It was completely my fault but I’ve learnt from it and this is to give everyone an update as to what I did.
Running a gardening business is hard. Its not just the gardening side you have to be good at. Managing people and situations is also a crucial part. Mistakes will be made but its how you learn from them.

  1. No matter how you run you're business you need to be consistent with pricing. Im building my business at the moment and my pricing reflects the quality of my work.

  2. I think you're spot on. If she pays more, she will expect more!
I'm currently working out what clients I want coming into next year. A couple of my larger jobs have cried off for the Winter (I suspect they want to save a bit whilst they aren't using the garden)
The only thing is, I have fallen into the same position that I did a little while ago, that I haven't been updating my Facebook business profile for a good while now, which has meant that I haven't had a new enquiry for months really. I have enough work on through regular work and extra jobs through word of mouth/neighbours of regulars… But it seems odd that I haven't had any enquires outside of that!
Is that likely to be a combination of not advertising and also the time of year?
My plan is to have a big advert push at the start of the new year and try and pick up a few more small jobs.

  3. If she watches YouTube, I'd guess she, or somebody else that knows her, actually knows now. Having said that, you've done the right thing. Well done

  4. You are absolutely right about this. I've always been very selective with my customers. Been in business for quite a few years and have no stress and hassle as a result.

  5. I've held onto small jobs that I've had for years even though they weren't really serving me… It's a learning process this business for sure! Some jobs can become more of a social friend thing especially for the elderly I find. You've got to prioritise income at the end of the day 👍🏻

  6. Exactly right. There are too many people out there who will take take take. Always do what’s right for you because the takers out there won’t care about you. Hold on to the good customers as much as you can always. It’s the good customers that make our work worthwhile

  7. I've done it 8 years now mate, and ive learnt to go with my gut feeling about customers and situations. The beauty of having your own busniess is if you are not happy working with someone , whether it's the money, lack of respect or expectation from them, then you can just chose to not work for them anymore 👍

  8. Had the same issue in my first year mate.
Thats the beauty of having your own business.
I always have to tell myself before taking on new work, (make it work on your terms) 💪 .

Ps……could do with an update on pricing. With the cost of living and all that it would be nice to hear your thoughts on weather you are thinking of putting your prices up for the new season next year? Thinking i am going to put all my work up £5 an hour.
