We Bought 3 Shipping Containers

We went back and forth on if we should build our dream cabin or we should build a shipping container house and the container home won!! We are really excited to share this next chapter with you and can’t wait to see how the project unfolds.

Shipping containers have a lot to offer for our off grid situation because of their instant ability to provide a waterproof, strong structure. We have been debating different design options for a while, but having three shipping containers next to each other gives us enough space and flexibility to create a really comfortable living situation (hopefully!). In terms of color and size, we basically just bought the containers that were available at the time–20ft was all we could get up our road, so the 40ft containers weren’t even an option. We got two standard shipping containers that look like they are at the end of their service life, but are totally watertight still, and then we got one High Cube container that is much newer so we could have higher ceilings and more insulation in one of the three at least.

We plan to do one shipping container office, one kitchen, and one bedroom/living room. This will be a massive undertaking and probably will take the better half of a year to get it all done. So hope you’re ready for a lot of container content!

Big hugs,
Dana

ps thank you to Tyler from Island Industries for his amazing help with the shipping containers – https://www.island-ind.com/

pps – we’ve had a TON of rain since the gravel pit was built, and the entire area has stayed really dry so far, so it looks like it was worth the effort. That whole area has a gentle slope downhill, and Lou spent a week scraping all the mud and topsoil off everything, but mudseason will be the real test of how well it works ; ) One day we’ll probably have to remove the woodchips we put down as they break down into soil, but it will be perfect for a gardening project!

  1. I am SO HERE for this adventure!!! Do you know what colour you want to paint the outside of them?? I feel like there's so much potential for fun with the exterior colour!

  2. Well I was a sub back when you guys got the boat and then I got sick, ended up doing/watch nothing til the last few months, just found your new channel here and will be trying to catch up or update myself, I re-sub and plan on re-watching all the stuff I saw long time ago which I did like for the most part for sure, how is your brother, still in the show too, guess I'll get to watching, If it was me, I would build my house on top of the containers with a over hang of 4 to 6 feet, also dig a french drain around the place, add a large water catchment container or 2, Later

  3. The best book you can ever make an investment in the encyclopedia of country living by Carla Emery you can never go wrong by owning this book

  4. Or you could just get jobs and build a house and a nest egg so you child wouldn't grow up in a never ending circle of gimmicks for views…

  5. Awesome guys! Congratulations and good luck in this new project! I am sure it will turn out pretty nice because you are so determined and good in what you do!

  6. PLEASE stop using 'upstate NY' – it's just such a polarizing term. Just say your region (Hudson Valley, Catskills, Southern Teir, etc…)

  7. Looks So much better when painted! Are you not connecting them? I was wondering why they were placed so far apart

  8. wow, been a minute since I caught one of your videos (thanks youtube algorithm). So much has changed! New project AND a baby ✨ Congrats guys, very exciting times for you!

  9. Yet another beautiful video. Your honesty and hard work is so refreshing. Please get Bryce from Tiny Homes to do a tour when you get finished. My two favourite YouTubers unite! So excited for your journey. Thank you for sharing it with us x

  10. I’m new to your channel and I certainly like what I viewing. You mentioned that you are having trouble locating information online about your foundation. I HIGHLY recommend the channel “Life Uncontained” with Spencer and Mackenzie. They built a home from 2 containers and their last video was listing/showing the things they liked/didn’t like. It’d just be easier for you to watch from beginning to end.
