Seeding A Lawn LATE In The Season

Is it too late to seed a new cool season lawn? We’re about to find out!

Of course the ideal time to plant a new cool season lawn is in the late summer/early fall depending on your location. However, our new house is close to being finished and the grading work was just completed so I have bare soil that is ready for planting. I’m trying some experiments with straw blankets, row cover fabric, and plastic cover for my ryegrass.

  1. Looking good. Let me know if you need someone to break in your course when its built. Im close by.

  2. Hope that seed project works out well! I’ll be looking forward to seeing the golf course project.

  3. My main front yard with the RK KGB PRG came out phenomenal, according to another one of my neighbors! 2 months old now, and I started fall blitzing it each week Oct 5 and I finally was able to use the styper on it and it looked soooo good afterwards. Wish I could post a pic. Still plenty of seed left for the other side, and for some touch up work. I'm debating on how I should handle the 1000 sq ft plot on the other side, but I have 6 months to think about it. Whether to kill off half of it in April, then plant on May 1 or just do the whole thing.

  4. Looking great! I know you got it pretty smooth and it's after the fact, but I like dragging it with a good size piece of cyclone fence. Just a thought. Thank you for your videos!

  5. No neighbors to say “what the hell is Ryan up to now”.

It’s November 1st. You probably have germination already.

  6. Hey man, from Australia, just wanted to say thanks.
I actually think it's so cool that you're teaching and helping people with their yards from another country!

  7. Will need to have the well fill a rainwater tank at barn when I there is insufficient rain water and run pressure pump from that tank for irrigation

  8. Hey Ryan, Plastic covering works great to germinate.
Then you have to pull it because Pythium sets in really easy. You can punch holes in the cover and put on late in the day over night for awhile. Black green house shade cloth works great too…
    It breathes better…
Get with your well contractor and irrigation contractor and put a water plan together. I'm sure you've got that in the works… Biuld a pump house so you can put the biggest pressure tank you can afford!
Your well pump will run less.
Over size for the future and build the system like you are biulding a golf course.
Large water main, zones, maybe several pumps to alternate and get more watering done quicker.
Don't skimp on your most important resource💦
water…..You'll be very happy man growing your turf in a hot, windy site!!
    Enjoy your dream man!
    Looking great!!!

  9. I love watching everything come together and Ryan you got one hell of a wife there she is great the world needs more women like her

  10. your going to need some sort of snow fence between you and the crops next door, every other year here, when they plant corn in the fall we have a yard full of stocks after harvest

  11. It's really coming together! Looks great! How much of the land beyond your house do you own?

  12. Alot of the New Zealand lawn Addicts crew are doing similar using shade cloth over their seed to keep the birds away and helping keep it moist and not getting burnt out or massive run off of seed seems to be a good idea for the fine fescue they are all planted comes up quick and looks good

  13. Last year, after seeding on in March, I used tarps that used to be side panels for shade tents and cut up big leaf/garbage bags over my seed/baby grass… I found the tarps much better than the bags cut up… I think it was because the tarps breathed a little bit, let the air and some rain water through a bit, and maybe even some sun, while the plastic bags did not… The tarps we also white and plastic leaf/garbage bags were black which may also have played a part… I left it all on for maybe a week… The parts that had the plastic garbage/leaf bags over them eventually recovered and grew pretty strong after getting some sun, water and air.

  14. Have you considered rain collection on a massive scale maybe 10k to 15k Gallons – wait you have enough water it's just the pressure loss jet pump buy a good one not a Maynards special lol

  15. I planted almost this late and it became an unintentional dormant seeding- turned unseasonably cold. Came up great the next spring. NE Iowa.

  16. I used crop cover to great success but I have never tried it so late in the season. It's great for minimizing pests digging up new grass as well. Sometimes you have to be a bit careful pulling it up because some baby grass with grow through the holes in the cover. Best of the luck!

  17. pretty risky to do this before watering situation is figured out…should be interesting to see the results

  18. Just wait until you get to experience all the critters out of town that you rarely experience in town. Birds tearing up the new seeding shoots, voles chewing out new grass, and of course the moles doing a number on the once flat dirt.

  19. You're doing great work, Ryan. Really enjoy your content. The PRG I bought from you this year is looking beautiful! (6b)

  20. I have 22 acres at my place. I may follow your idea of putting a fairway in. Its got a good high spot on one side then low in the middle then another high spot on the opposite side. Will make for a great shot.
