How to grow Black Dragon Japanese Cedar – Cryptomeria japonica. In this video I plant a Black Dragon Japanese Cedar in my yard. Black Dragon is an upright narrow growing Cryptomeria that can reach 10 feet in height. It is a slow growing conifer with very nice new growth in the spring and summer.

  2. Hello Jim! We just got two young cryptomerias black dragon. We put them in two bigger pots in the front entrance. They don’t receive direct sun. I didn’t water them for 7 days, being scared of overwatering them. Now they are getting brown at the bottom. I’m so concern. What do you think the problem may be? What can I do to help them? Thank you so much for your video.

  3. I have two three year old Black Dragons. I've never pruned them and really like their natural shape. Very spiny looking with different textures and colors.

  4. I live in zone 8, Georgia, I just bought my second black dragon, the first was a sickly one that was in a clearance section. I planted it outside and it gets full sun. It the browning it had got worse and eventually took over the whole thing. My new one I just picked up is very healthy, but now I’m trying to figure out where to plant it. I’m thinking in a place where it can get partial sun and some shade?

  5. Are you able to go to straight banzai container after route reduction or are you going to downsize over the course of a couple of years container sizes? I have a
cryptomeria japonica tansu. I’m reading online that I could prove it between spring and the end of summer is this true?

  6. Hi Jim, I would love to add two Black dragons to the front of my house (7a zone) but the problem is it’s East facing, gets sun through morning hours until about 1pm. Is that enough sun or should I steer away, thanks!
