How to Build an Elevated Garden Bed – Free Downloadable Plans Included!

Learn how to build an elevated cedar garden planter box. In this video, I will build a 2 foot by 4 foot elevated garden planter out of cedar for backyard gardening. This cedar planter box is perfect for your next DIY outdoor project. Cedar lumber is perfect for planter boxes as the wood is naturally rot-resistant so it should last for years to come. Elevated garden planters such as the one I build in this video are perfect for gardening since the plants are at arms reach while standing. I have had great success gardening with these planter boxes and since they are elevated, the bunnies and small wildlife have not eaten the plants. I have a link to the plans for these cedar planter boxes below that can be downloaded and used during construction. If you are new to gardening or want to try growing your own food, I highly recommend building an elevated cedar planter box! In this video, I will also show you how to install hardware cloth and the landscape fabric into the planter boxes. I really hope you enjoy this elevated cedar planter box build and if you have any questions about the plans or how I constructed the boxes please let me know in the comment section below.

  1. A little too advanced for me. I was hoping
for something little more basic for someone who does not have all the fancier tools. But nonetheless this was a great vid and something to eventually aspire to.

  2. Nice video but I don't have that kind of equipment to build these boxes would be nice to see a video using basic tools

  3. OMG……someone that knows how to use a miter saw. I see that you let the blade come to a COMPLETE stop before raising it back up.

  4. The only time you need to wait for a miter saw to stop is when you have a very tiny sliver of wood you just cut off.
Even then only if you are trying to save the sliver. There is a fence behind the blade on both sides and the work piece ends need to be supported.
Anything larger than an inch or so is not going anywhere.

  5. Get four treated 2x4s the height of the bench you want. Use 4x4s if you want to waste money.
Plan the length and width to make the best use of your lumber. Nail or screw treated boards around the legs to make a box.
Plan to use 1×6 or 1×8 for the sides and you could go up to 2×6 or 2×8 for the bottom but probably not necessary.
No need to joint the edges or glue, or use pocket screws. Use solid boards in the bottom spaced apart slightly for drainage.
For the bottom plan the width by buying the correct width boards and if you don't want to rip the length of the last one put it inside on top.
You can add a flat 2×4 on the ends and near the middle to strengthen the bottom on the inside and one near the middle to make the sides stronger.
Line with landscaping cloth that will let water pass through it, if you don't have that use an old bed sheet.
You are done and all treated lumber since 2004 is safe around food.
All you need is a basic plan of how big, a circular saw, a square, a hammer or a drill if you are going to use screws.
Make sure you use galvanized nails or exterior screws. You are building a box to grow plants outside not a cabinet.

  6. I'm a DIYer myself and decided to build my own elevated planter box. I like to keep it simple and functional. After seeing so many plans I think I'm gonna go with your plan. It's simple, material is not too much and most importantly, it serves its purpose.

  7. I tried the link for the plans and all I see is a cut list does not explain how to assemble. However they are beautiful and I would love a true set of plans.

  8. Very nice video, they're beautiful… wished that simple tools were used as not everyone has or can afford fancy tools like that. Thanks for the video though.

  9. Thank you for the video and for the drawing. I think that that in the list of materials is missing the 8 pcs 5/8 x 3.5 x 16 inch support pieces. Thank you again.

  10. Looks OK but all that detailed work and the price of cedar could have made them out of pallets and still look good for way less cost.

  11. Nicely done. I do it differently. Nice to see they way others do things. I love my Kreg.. Thanks for sharing..

  12. Wow, great video William, well done. I downloaded your plans for the planter, Thank you. I will be building a couple of them. I'm very happy I came across your channel, new subscriber from Iowa. You have excellent video skills and are well spoken. Keep at it!!👌😎

  13. it could be so easy design and you've so overcomplicated it using tones of devices you didn't have to

  14. Some the of the Dewalt miter saws have been recalled. Please check out their website. And much props for all your vids.
