Trichomes are the little flakes that cover the surface of air plants (some are more pronounced than others), which gives them their silvery appearance. They help to catch and absorb water that comes in contact with the plant. Once the plant has enough moisture, the trichomes close up, giving the air plant a deeper green colour. As with all plants, you should water whenever the plant needs it. You can soak them for any length of time or mist them on a more frequent basis. ***Here’s the important thing: your air plant needs to get bright light (some sun is okay) so that it can use up any excess water it may have collected. When there’s not enough light, the plant doesn’t use the water. This extra water is perfect for other microorganisms to multiply, which causes rot. So to be safe, shake off excess water after soaking your air plants and make sure they get enough light. I’ll cover how to measure light in another post. #airplants #tillandsia #airplantlove #airplantcare
