In May 1942 the Imperial Japanese Navy sent three midget submarines armed with torpedoes into Sydney Harbour.
The plan was to launch an attack on Australian and American warships and the Australian naval base, in the heart of Sydney.
One of the two-man subs slipped in behind a Manly ferry and sidled right up next to a US warship before firing its torpedoes.
All around the city, people were woken by the sounds of explosions and depth charges.
Director of Heritage Operations for Heritage NSW, Tim Smith OAM, shares this incredible true story from WWII.
