Backyard Garden

Transfoming a Broken Backyard Into a Usuable Oasis | Dirty Business (Garden Makeover) | Abode

As the Dirty Business crew renovates Jackie’s backyard there’s a case of broken telephone, a huge deck install and lots of rain. James Dale tries to get it all done on schedule, but the transformation process gets stalled. Can designers James Dale, Joel Loblaw, Kennedy McRae and Lorne Hancock manage the tension and stress of Jackie’s expectations?

  1. Three Tulip Poplar trees in the hedge between the yards? Did anybody take into account that those trees GROW? Like, to 75-80 feet tall, with a crown almost as wide? Um, no.

  2. the transformation is lovely but the 'martini glasses'are absurd and so is the pot of artificial flowers. whats the purpose.

  3. I actually prefer the "land" part of landscaping. A bit too much wood and gravel for my taste. Good ideas about privacy plants, though, and great idea about creating diagonals that I'll take with me.

  4. Stunning! As for the comments about the lack of hand rails, whilst I get what folk are saying I imagine Jackie would have been consulted throughout each stage of the project, (given she was paying for it), and would have given her consent either way. Plus she doesn't look disabled or decrepit in any way so likely she felt okay about the lack of hand rails. I would have liked to have seen a water feature of some description, oh and globes of varying sizes …… just NO, lol. But that's just a personal bette noire. The team and sub-contractors seem to gel pretty well and had fun whilst working. All in all a great project.

  5. one rain and all that furniture is unusable and starts rotting. extremely impractical, what was that designer thinking?? XD

  6. It was beautiful! The colors of the flowers, the plants, everything is very beautiful. But I was worried about the stairs. The environment was cozy, I wanted to sit in that armchair.

  7. This is the only one I don't like. I always disagree with how many trees they plant but I don't even like this design except for the slow gradual descent around the maple. Even the decorator mentioned that it was overwhelming. And why was the installer/demolition guy surprised to find an old pre-existing patio under the deck? That's what our house has. Then, as usual, they planted 3 unnecessary, large trees on a fence line which will completely outgrow the space – and completely shade the neighbor as well. I agree with other commenters that there needs to be a railing at least where there are no evergreens to delineate the lower deck edge. Plus, the decking will trip anyone coming from the alley to the back yard, and what is the little slot between the upper deck and the handrail? The only good thing about this episode is they showed the mistakes and the owner's frustrations.

  8. Love the designs, love the plants, love the finished product. However, the high school humor and Dumb and Dumber routine could end anytime

  9. I love the mom – so many backyard redesigns just get rid of the backyard! Love the mom called it out.

  10. It is all beautiful! My only concern are the steps, the way the corners are a stepping off point. An accident waiting to happen.

  11. Especially with her elderly mom, I wonder about the absence of railings and the square steps. For the same reason, it's too bad that there is so little space to walk around the lounge chair at the bottom of the garden. Did the pea gravel ended up being full of leaves and weeds over time? And did the dog have to use the groundcover when he was let out? If so, I imagine it would be like an Easter egg hunt to scoop!

  12. It looks beautiful. Where do dogs go to the bathroom when there isn’t a yard? (I’m really just wondering. I’ve never had a dog).
