Building a Solar Powered Garden Shed with my Daughter @Emily Aisling

Over the summer, my daughter Emily Aisling and I built a garden shed on top of the root cellar to store gardening tools and to preserve and store food from the garden. To power the freezer, freeze dryer and future greenhouse, we install a Renogy Lycan solar generator with four 320w solar panels, a system we can easily expand if our energy needs increase.

  1. This reminds me of all the time I spent on the farm with my dad. I learned so much and I've been able to tackle any project around my own home! Dads – show your daughters as much as your sons! It matters!

  2. That would be ideal for a sturdy shelf with thick boards the height of the shed and 1-2 mason jars deep for your canning jars, assuming solar will keep the inside of the shed from constantly freezing over the winter. Everybody can use some storage and you can take it to your next home when you expand.! Screw the shelf to the wall for security !

  3. Wow, I thought the old root cellar you had made was on the old property. Good to see it put to good use. You worked so hard to make it.

  4. I'm impressed with Emily, it warms my heart to see father and daughter working together on various projects.

  5. Shawn is incredible your work to create all this! the number of followers you have is also incredible, and the relationship you have is almost a friendship, that's why I think it's fair that in addition to separating things between business and friendship, you give a value to that for the paid subscription say….I saw yesterday's video of nature relaxing before I paid for it, beautiful! …. it's a pity that it's not free for the world …..

  6. 9:56 Gas Powered generator….Will it run "A STILL" for making ur own ADULT BEVERAGES? If the still is inside the shed the REVENUERS won't see it, they can't tax what they don't see…..

  7. Nice solar setup. 🙂 I hope you enjoy that 🙂 My stone house has been hit with lightning twice in 7 years. The breakers turned off. I put an inbound waterproof circuit breaker, surge protection and fuse with box at least 10m. away from my batteries, inverter, charger. So the live line cut when the lightning hit. The big if possibility 1 in a million chance if not grounded and you go there to check on the system you can be electrocuted. But it is a very low voltage system a small shock. How I did it. Thick copper wire to my panels outside guy-line copper ground rod 2m. with bentonite in a plastic sono tube pipe. Then from inside ground everything to another 6mm ground wire with 2m. copper ground rod bentonite plastic sono tube pipe. Basically ground everything but keep your solar panels separate from damaging your solar shed or devices. So solar panel in the back shed and inside ground in the front shed. The other part of wood and electrical fires is high if not grounded. Take it slowly think ask you will get it done. Always enjoy watching. Take care all the best be safe. 🙂

  8. You are so much like your dad’s your not lazy and you love the nature and he is showing you how to do stuff that you will need in life and I wish I could have a father like that my father never thought me anything take all what you’re dad will though you because he is telling you how to survive my family was more like a bunch of drunk people and I don’t drink like they did and I never had kids because of the way I was raised so that knowledge that your father is telling you and us is really important but me I’m disabled living in a home care love nature but can’t barely walk so I have you guys for me to see nature and everything else take care and have fun with your family

  9. These solar systems. Something i wonder. Theyre expensive and complicated. How durable are they? Panels included. Im not complaining, Im wondering how many years can one reasonably reley on a solar panel battery system before breakdown. I also understand that efficiency degrades over time. At least in respect to the panels. If i ran off grid, how many years can i expect to have electricity?

  10. New logo. Looks nice. Good to see you working with your daughter, you two are making memories that will get passed on to the grandkids. Thanks for sharing.

  11. You did an amazing job raising your kids. You must be so proud and have a ball spending time with your daughter. God Bless 😊

  12. We have one child, a beautiful daughter. She married a guy who loves her what is dangerous to all with even a screwdriver in his hand. And he has no interest in learning how to use tools or do repairs. Daughter has been by my side through house construction 50 years ago, garden building, and she is reaping the rewards of my mentoring. She holds a masters degree in communications, an undergrad in economics and more. Can whip up a great meal in nothing flat… Does minor electrical repairs and in-house construction… loves her recip saw! Does the oversight for rental income units to reno… maintains award winning gardens and runs a great garden website to help beginners. FaceTime is our long distance tool… her motto… when all else fails, call dad! If you want to see what non-sexist marriage looks like, check out Simple Living Alaska… both sexes do all tasks, indoors and outdoors.

  13. Great video just goes to show people girls can do outside work too, nice video thanks for sharing.

  14. For some reason I thought the root cellar was under the cabin..? The amount of work and diligence in completing so much is amazing! Is there a way to see the lay of the land as far as the building and their purpose go..sorry but I am loosing track . Thanks

  17. Shawn, your daughter is very handy and I am sure she learned a lot of her skills from you. Case in point, her garden is actually better organized than your forest garden, sorry but it is.

  18. I may have missed this…. But where is this Shawn, at your place or at Emily’s?
