Planting My First Japanese Maple | Gardening with Creekside

Japanese maples bring distinct color and texture to the garden, and I am so excited to be planting my first Japanese maple in our space near the patio. This ‘Fireglow’ maple is going to give us years of enjoyment with its gorgeous foliage!

  1. Japanese Maples are an asset in pots because you can move them around your garden and add instant interest with height. These petite maples are perfect for the suburban gardens. Go big on the purchase of JM s if you can afford it as they are slow growers. Bijou is one of my favorites for 4 season interest and only gets about 9 feet high. I get compliments in winter and early spring on this trophy because the bark is yellow with new growth show casing in red.

  2. That is going to look so great. I think you needed a tree in that bed and the fall show will be wonderful. Also, that redbud is looking amazing!
Brynna is really learning and is such a nosy rosy! She’s a good girl.

  3. Thank you for sharing! This came just in time as I am about to plant my coral bark Japanese maple I got for my birthday. It's already starting to leaf out!

  4. Fireglow is my only zone 7 Japanese Maple too… I bought a small one and am trying to be patient… it's doing very well in a part sun area under a very large oak that has been limbed up… you might get some crispy leaves by late summer on yours in that spot.

  5. Wonderful. It’s going to look amazing Jenny. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

  6. I just planted a Fireglow a little over three weeks ago. This was a three gallon and it is in a large planter on my deck. I had a Bloodgood that was about five years old planted near the river bank and the beavers chopped it down to a stub this past winter, hence the planter now and I even put a tree protector on it because I don't know if beavers can climb up thirty or so inches into a pot. My tree is just starting to open its leaves and we are looking at a low of twenty four degrees over the weekend so I guess it will get a blanket over it. I can't wait to see this beauty when it leafs out.

  7. Love the Japanese maple… live in Hickory and wondering if my 3yo will come back this year… I have it in a large pot!

  8. i planted a bloodgood in memory of my son. it was a tiny tree when i planted it in 2017 and it is massive and gorgious in 2022

  9. I have a few Japanese maples in my garden. Emperor1, Crimson Queen, Shaina and for beautiful spring color Autumn Moon in my zone 5b garden. Love my Japanese maples because they look great any season.

  10. I have a Fireglow in a pot right now and can't WAIT to put it in our yard too! I have several JM's and since it's your first I recommend making sure your careful with the fertilizer. They aren't like other plants and don't like as much since they are slow growing. Same with watering so I would watch carefully with your clay soil. Can't wait to see in its glory in your garden. ❤️

  11. Before I could even finish watching your video I got online and order one of these Japanese maple trees. You sold me.

  12. Oh Jenny your perennial bed is looking so beautiful already. What a gorgeous time of year and I always love seeing what you plant. This area has developed so quickly. Gorgeous. The fireglow is the perfect choice. Love seeing your happy little Brynna too. Happy weekend 😍

  13. Hi did u redo or painted your shed ,? I’m loving it with all u have surrendering it ,I love ❤️ Maples it will be beautiful 😻

  14. That is a beautiful Japanese Maple. I really enjoyed the planting process and the look at how your perrenials are doing back there. Thanks.

  15. I saw a Japanese maple at Lowe's the other day but starting a business takes most of the capital now!
    Building our way up!!
    Learning from Creekside!!

  16. I hear that Fireglow can put up with the heat in the South, but I must say I am surprised it does not scorch in the hot afternoon sun. That really is amazing!

  17. I'm sure you intended it, but just have to compliment you on the perfect placement of your new tree with the center window of your house.

Love seeing your redbud starting to color up. Please post images when it's in full glory.

As a single homeowner, I use a small level (held vertically) when I plant a tree to ensure the trunk is straight on all sides. Just my life hack for others who may need that. 😃

  18. Your dog is very pretty:) can’t wait to see that tree grow and the color is going to be gorgeous with the green trees in the back:) oh my sitting on your back porch and drinking a cup of coffee and looking out and seeing that view:) heavy sigh 🙂 tfs stay safe and God Bless:)

  19. Your puppy is more help than a woman could ask for, ha ha …she is so cute. Love my Japanese maple but as I am in 6a I have it in a pot and it comes in to the house in the winter. Thanks for sharing.

  20. We have a 90 pound German Shepherd/Hound mix and she likes to dig.. but not where I want a hole.. ha ha Gardening with pets is FUN!! ha ha Keep up the good videos. 🙂 Hi from Nash County NC. PS– I bought a Japanese Maple tree (Bloodgood) in the clearance sale last year and I noticed this year we have leaves.. YEAH!! it survived!! 🙂

  21. What a gorgeous tree. I have a bloodgood that the top died out on. I haven’t given up on it but if I need to replace it that Fireglow looks perfect 😊

  22. Greetings from Nursery Land in western Oregon . Nice job demonstrating the B&B planting technique — it is most definitely different than planting a pot grown plant. Not allowing the dirt to break off from the roots is key. I tell folks to make sure to pull the burlap and twine away from the trunk/root collar, otherwise it holds moisture in there and makes a good home for bugs – and just like you showed — don't try to unwrap the whole ball. Keep us updated, it will be fun for you to watch the tree go thru the seasons!

  23. Happy Saturday Jenny ,That’s going to be a beautiful tree, great choice.Well you got your first Japanese maple and today my David Austin rose shrub bare root has Arrived , is called Lark ascending, apricot coloring. My first one😊

  24. I am curious as to why you added Holly Tone now since you had to put the Biotone outside the ream of the tree. Why both tones now?
I enjoy Brenna keeping you company and so playful in the background.😉🌿💚🐕

  25. You shouldn't fertilize a new plant at all the first two years (biotone is the exception). But what ever, market the hell out of it right? Not your garden if a plant dies somewhere else.

  26. I recently bought a Fireglow Japanese Maple but I am confused why the leaves turned green instead of red? Wonder if it doesn't get much sun?
