DIY French Drain | Cheap Yard Drainage Solution | pt. 1

This is an easy DIY french drain project for any homeowner looking for a cheap drainage solution.

This might not be an expensive project but it will produce professional grade results that work. I have installed a few drains like this in the past and they have worked amazing. Using a lot of stone in combination with a non woven geotextile drainage fabric will keep this drain flowing for many years to come. Maybe forever.

  1. I couldn't tell, was that piping the kind with holes in it or not? The box stores have both and I'm not clear on which to use.

  2. I'd be careful and check your state code. Storm water here in Colorado is technically not allowed to be drained into your main sewer. Hence that even sump pumps here are not allowed to be pumped to main sewer even in areas with alot of ground water.

  3. If the sod survived, I'd be surprised. When dry spells come, the sod needs depth of soil to stay hydrated. Sitting on rocks just doesn't seem to me like it's going to work.

  4. I like it, but I will do mine narrower and not that deep, to allow me to use less gravel, because you used lots of gravel, which is heavy and expensive.

  5. lol Hypothetically. Great video. Thank you for the great video. How to you make sure water flows in the correct direction? Obviously it will flow downhill but how low do you go?

  6. The French has set one these up in Lebanon or was it Yemen for its oil, I forget because it's been blatantly stolen from all over the east by west and it's supported colonies 'Israel' a complete loss of morals in these desperate times to gain global dominance.

  7. Did Americans invent another sort of drain after they noticed that drains from the old country worked but Americans rather want freedom drains?

  8. I’ve just dugout, by hand, 8 cubic metres of soil on my allotment, why? To get rid of french drains in what was a farmers field.

  9. What's the point of draining ? You should have started with an explanation of the goal.
I'm sure you lose 90% of your audience juste because they do not see the point.
The build is interesting but it's not enough to retain attention.
I've briefly watched the video (skipped to the end result) but I still don't know what it is about and WHY you do it.

  10. I'm French and I was a bit confused by the name so I looked online and now I understand!
Henry Flagg French made this popular.
    Great idea👍

  11. This is a great video man. I have built some smaller french drains and have found them easy and very handy. However, I am preparing to start a much larger french drain project, and this gave me some excellent pointers I did not think about prior. Thanks, and keep on keeping on! 🙂

  12. well those work…here in the pac nw cobble rock riverbed is also used a lot..no pipe to worry about or clog cloth or no cloth put in your pipe under the sidewalk..grate on each end and cobble flare to the street edge then take the thin strip of sod off on the plant bed side and put in some more trees

  13. just what I needed…. nicely planned and carried out and very good camera work, thank you!!!

  14. Thanks so much man. I thought that you wrapped the pipe vs adding the gravel and wrapping the gravel with the pipe. Thank again. 👍🏻

  15. Must have been done in a warmer climate area. In the northeast, we need to dig much deeper so that the trench is below the freezing line (maybe 16 to 18 inches) to prevent issues with drainage in colder weather.

  16. You should look into water retention and better retention soils as well as rehabilitating the land and soil by allowing the grass to grow into a meadow and use some soil fixing green clovers and peas to add additional therapy to your land and to give back to the native flora and fauna we are starting to lose everyday due to developing of the lands.
I’ve been learning a lot about how to create a healthier planet by using plants, this means less maintenance and more water retention to allow ancient underground aquifers to refill without wasting that precious resource and putting it all back into the ocean through the sewage lines. Which helps no one here in the long run.
I’m a weirdo about this stuff but it fascinates me and I’m hoping to introduce the new lawn and soil style of care in order to achieve a healthier planet.
That’s just the fraction of good things that would benefit. Not to mention gorgeous native insects like dragonflies and lady bugs spending more time in your area.
I’m not the brightest individual and honestly I feel I’m better off in the soil to be frank, as I don’t do much for anyone or the world.
The only thing I have is finicky knowledge about how to make mushrooms and soil grow abundantly in your backyard and land. And hopefully to get more engaged in learning about nitrogen fixing plants and how the underground aquifer is drying up day by day due to humans streets and sidewalks.

  17. Anything except for some foods that has the word French attached to it is junk and most likely will not work.

  18. I put in new sod and a paver patio last summer the yard has always been crazy uneven it’s better but now I get a pool of water that collects on the patio. Any tips to drain it or divert the water?

  19. Its not cheaper…cutting into city owend property not good…rent a sod cutter ? Textile fabric .. ? If your this rich hire a pro.. 3 tons of gravel ? Ha ha

  20. What I never understand is the reason for putting the drench down? Did you have water sitting somewhere around there? A nice lush lawn usually doesn't need any drainage.

  21. washed gravel for the drainage system , is there any code or specs as a reference for this subject ? and the size of gravel 57 as well ?

  22. Do I have to add the drainage pipe if I'm simple catching runoff from driveway? I have a downspout that empties on driveway and can't really be buried or moved, so we sloped the driveway to drain along the side of driveway, where I've dug a trench. Is it enough to simply lay fabric, gravel, and river rock?
