Self-watering Container Garden on Driveway June 29 2014

I’m growing Tomatoes, Potatoes, Beets, Cucumbers, Peas, Beans, and Sugar Snap Peas in self-watering containers in my driveway.
I’m also growing potatoes in towers, in plastic gunny sacks. I roll out the sacks as needed, and add soil. The potato plants themselve should reach 5 ft tall when I’m done.
The buckets are 6 gallon pails. The bottom 6 inches is a water reservoir, with a 1″ PVC tube for easy filling. The top 12-14″ of pail is filled with dirt, compost, peat and potting soil.
I also drill a good number of holes in the sides of the buckets to let the soil breathe.
I cage many of the plants to train them to grow UP, and also to give things like peas and beans something grow on.
I’ll plant a bucket Snap Peas soon, for a fall harvest. I usually lose the early Snap Peas (which I plan in with the tomatoes) in July due to the heat.
We are USDA zone 4b/5a.

  1. Cool idea. For 6 inches drain hole, how often do u water your plants?

  2. Nice work !
I love the idea of having a mobile garden that can be moved around..
Following the sun or avoiding the frost.
