Do not use landscaping fabric, in 2 or 3 years you will be sorry that you even thought about using it.

I cut a circle around the fabric and leave a few inches of open space around the trunk of the plant, I feel like pulling the barrier tightly around the shrub will choke the plant and inhibit growth
