The term 'cold end exhaust' would typically now refer specifically to the 'back box' of an exhaust system, therefore the box WITHOUT the catalytic converter. Before the days of catalytic converters the terminology would have been simply 'front box' (that box on the exhaust system closest to the engine) and 'back box' (that box which was closets to the back of the car.
All cars with catalytic converters have said converters contained within the box nearest to the engine, therefore the term 'cold end exhaust' has emerged to within the industry to specifically refer to what was known before as the 'back box'…ie., the box which does NOT contain a catalytic convertor. Just saying…..
