  1. I amend my soil with night crawler worms and mycorrhizae fungi to keep it well aerated. You can get worms from garden centers or sporting good stores where they are sold as fishing bait.

  2. Awesome video, educational! I find out a lot of natural way to amend the soil, like grass clippings for natrium, every time a mow my lawn I get a handful of grass clippings and throw them in my flower and vegetable garden. I also keep egg shells, then crush them and throw them in beds, egg shells are amazing source of natural calcium, it takes a long time for the egg shells to release the calcium (about a year) so I just keep throwing them in my beds. Wood ashes are also amazing for potassium, I just sprinkle it on the top of my flower beds. And what I also use is cow and chicken manure once a year. And my potatoes grows best if I put some gypsom in the ground before planting the potatoes.

  3. Another great video Janey. So informative and beneficial to all us gardeners. This is what every girl/gardener needs…a soil expert in her neighborhood. Also, loving your sweatshirt. I’m going to check it out for myself.😊

  4. Wow Janey! This is so so interesting!! Daniel is so helpful and interesting to hear! I kind of know that my soil is high ph with high calcium but I’m excited to get it tested to know for sure what are my soil levels. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  5. Awesome video! What a great neighbor to have. Most county extension offices will do basic soil testing or a more extensive test for little to no charge.

  6. Very cool!! I think compaction is a lot of my problem too. I’m definitely going to add gypsum and dig!!

  7. Thank you so much Daniel and Janey! This is the best video I have ever seen on soil improvement.

  8. Excellent video! He is so right…my house is raised off the ground 6 ft and it was filled with boulders and cement, horrible. It took me weeks to remove with a pick ax and shovel (my arms got so strong 💪🏼) and replaced with good soil and amendments. I slowly worked other areas with the shovel, but did add gypsum in those areas and worm castings and composted manure and everything in those beds thrived. Thanks for this valuable information! I wish I had a Daniel too.😄🌸💙

  9. What a great video! It's wonderful to hear from a soil scientist and have scientific data and expertise to inform actions. So many gardeners (on and off YT) don't always have the best scientific recommendations. I appreciated the content quality on this segment! Thanks!
As for the compaction – look at a method called double digging. It is a lot of shovel work for ONE time bed prep, but will methodically shift your soil from compacted to more friable as you turn in soil amendments like the gypsum and compost. And it does not destroy soil structure in the way a tiller does. It's pretty fast, easy to make sure you turned the entire garden space, and keeps things tidy while working down the bed. And you can skip the gym the week you do this. 💪🦵😁
Plant roots will thank you! Good luck double digging!

  10. I love the double-dig method!! I’ve used it in various areas of my gardens to help against compaction 😊Thank you so much – I learned a lot from this video!! I didn’t know that CA needs to send their samples locally – makes sense though!!

  11. Great video! I always add gypsum to areas in my garden in Vacaville, but since some beds still get very hard, my guess is I haven’t been adding enough gypsum. Also interesting about the rototiller! Thanks for doing this video!

  12. Daniel was awesome!! Yes, we all need a Daniel next door. I will definitely have my soil tested. I'm sure it is not perfect soil here in Texas although it has a ton of compost in it. Great informative video!! You are one lucky woman! Thanks so much for sharing. Kudos to Daniel too!

  13. This was great! I have wondered about the tilling. Thanks to you and wonderful neighbor.

  14. Janie this was the best video ever! It answered so many questions about my terrible soil in zone 9b. What fertilizer do you think you will use for increasing your nitrogen level? Thanks , love your channel❤

  15. Super interesting and informative!!! What an awesome neighbor for a gardener to have! Thank you both Janey and Danyel!
