Watercolor Garden Sketchbook Winter Rose Tutorial

Watercolor Garden Sketchbook Winter Rose Tutorial: In this demo we will be painting Alla Prima or all at once with lifting and chalk accents.
Important to remember: Keep a calm pace as you paint, never be afraid to step up and walk away to take a moment, a deep breath, and a reminder to keep calm and paint on!
If you choose to paint along here is my formula for an emotive watercolor gardening experience:
1) All at once sketching: Loose pencil sketch of subject focusing on rose and leaf shapes, capturing the silhouette. Similar to contour drawing try to sketch without lifting your pencil off the paper.
2) All at once first layer: paint loose brush strokes blocking in color, shaping the pink rose petals and cool green leaves, drop in a little yellow into your petals, and a little pink into your leaves. With a thirsty brush lift out highlights.
3) All at once finishing touches: Find your calm and begin to balance your painting. Are your colors balancing? Value? Details? Cutting our own stencils from plastic or tape we can add balancing highlights by lifting, add balancing values with negative painting, and add balancing textures with our chalk or pastel pencil.

  1. Good moring from me , another wonderful painting . Love the softness of colours and the muted background.. My favorite colours infact. Made for a calminng start to my day watching you create. A neighbor near me had a beautiful garden filled with roses , but there was one that grew that truly stood out , it was a soft coffee colour.. I'd never seen one like it before. My Mum and Dad when alive grew roses . Magnificent … The colours their perfume .. How i miss them both so much , and seeing them in the garden tending with so much love and joy to the array of flowers… It's the one thing I have always had trouble painting, " Roses " . So delicate with all their petals , shapes , contrasting light and shades.. You do it so well.. I envy you that talent.. Your painting is beautiful as always… I truly enjoy watching the process and the lovely end result.. Thank you once more for sharing your wonderful talent with us all.. Have a wonderful day and a peaceful weekend.. God Bless.x☺❤💞🌹

  2. PS, do you have a favorite brand of watercolours, or do you like to use all sorts.. I guess some brands would have favorite colours in them that some may not ? Just wondering ? Have a lovely day .. xx
