  1. Best advice I was ever given is to start immediately. If work presents itself do it. Admin, perfect equipment, billing systems, vehicle, marketing etc will come in time. Getting the experience of a few jobs is invaluable and it helps to get used to dealing with the 'game' of dealing with customers.

  2. Bang on point as always Rob, if the wheels are turning your not earning I like that so I do but it's so true, I tried to set up Google a few weeks back but I had problems it's something I need to sort out the marketing side logo on van uniforms here's hoping 2023 is a good year for business Rob all round keep the content coming take care 👍

  3. Great info thanks there is one other site I have found called Nextdoor. I have had a good amount of work from that site so if anyone has never heard of it then add it to the list and give it a try.

  4. Getting the first 3-4 customers is key. Then word of mouth will kick in and you wont need marketing much. I made a facebook page for the first couple of months then had to take it down as I got too busy.

  5. When I needed work I advertise in local parish magazine, for march April may and it been brilliant and kept me really local , and then your name gets banded about. But haven’t needed to advertise for last 4 years because of keeping it local.

  6. Hi Rob I found it was worthwhile to travel an hour through the Tyne tunnel to a decent sized job at Byker, obviously I had to allow for it in the price, but it was worth it, they literally couldnt get anyone decent that was local, but generally, I know what you mean!

  7. Not sure if this is a good idea, but I would assume flyers would be more useful if you have an area where you know there are a lot of retired potential customers, they'd be more likely to enquire, I would think that most other people would just use the internet to search for services. (I know some older people are better than us at tech) 👍

  8. 100% marketing is key Rob! I'm spending the quiet winter period mastering my social media and trying to get a website designed. I found that I've had the most amount of timewasters from facebook who are looking for a cheap man in a van, the best leads I reckon have come from Google as well as word of mouth

  9. Great post Rob. When I started I spent 4 weeks dropping leaflets daily in my home town in conjunction with advertising in my local free mag. That got me going quickly, I’ve never used FB or Google, the reason being is the best marketing/advertising once you’re started is your reputation. It’s priceless! Be reliable, honest and value for money. Your reputation is everything, it’ll make you money.

  10. Buy the best equipment 1st time, has rob said get out now word of mouth is the best by far. Do the work that you are happy with it. Not it will do rightly let's get out of here that's a NO NO. There is enough work to go around all of us believe me.

  11. Here I am watching your video about getting more work, nearly four years in and I turn down quite a bit of work, usually because they don't live in areas I work in.

Getting the van livered was the best move I ever did.

  12. One thing Rob, it might be possible for you to 'sell' your customers a new local gardener i.e. find a decent gardener over the bridge and explain to those customers that you can't cover the area but you have found them a decent gardener who will do the work. If the new gardener takes on the work they pay you for the customer – say 1 or more mow fees type of thing? That way you get a few ££ and the customer gets a new gardener, so everyone is happy!

  13. Great vid Rob. Thankfully I've never really needed to market myself in 7yrs of trading. That said, this year I've built myself a website and I know I should look in to all the excellent things you mention. But to be honest. It leaves me cold. I've zero interest in digital marketing. I think I'd rather pay someone to do it for me. But I will check out your links.
On another note. Given the financial uncertainty where all experiencing. Are you putting prices up next year?

  14. Hi mate i have gone to work for a gardening firm as my work has dried up apart from doing my mum's garden. It is maintaining the grounds and gardens of a university. nice advice in your video as always.
