Is It OK To Cut Banana Leaves Off After A Storm? Let's Take A Look.

I’ve been growing banana plants in zone 6b for about 5 years. In that amount of time, I’ve been able to overwinter two different species of banana plants outdoors. The species that we will be talking about today is Musa basjoo. During strong wind storms, it’s natural for banana leave to shred instead of break off. After an especially strong storm, I decided to trim off quite a few leaves from our banana plants. In this video, I’ll show you how that went. Let me know if you grow banana where you live. Thanks for watching!

  1. A really great grow over there. Leaves for mulching and a strong plant when it gets going. Thanks for the share!

  2. Good Morning and thanks for the update. I have never considered trying to grow bananas but they are an interesting plant. Perhaps you have mentioned it in previous videos but what got you interested in growing them and do they require a lot of care? Hope you have a great weekend!

  3. Always left the lacy looking damaged leaves on mine because I did like the look. Only had my bananas for about 5 years, then an especially cold winter -15ยฐF finished them off. Where did you get your plants?

  4. Good morning Jim. I don't trim the leaves on mine until they turn brown. The shredding doesn't look great but they still provide the plant with energy in my experience.

  5. Youโ€™ve got some very healthy banana plants. Theyโ€™re looking awesome. Happy weekend, mate. Cheers.

  6. Good morning. Those certainly are beautiful trees. Do they have time to produce bananas in your area?
I once had a dwarf banana tree, it made a rack of bananas but we had a freeze before they could ripen. Then later that winter the tree froze too even though we covered it. I never got another one.๐Ÿ˜ž. It's amazing how your tree comes back every year. Have a great weekend.

  7. Jim, it's a fascinating plant, but I've never grown one mainly because I'm pretty sure I'd have to dig it up in the fall or just let freeze in zone 5a. I'm still trying to get tulip and daffodil bulbs planted (I have nearly 400 to go) into my frozen ground! I hope you and Mrs. Midwest Gardener are having a pleasant weekend. ~Margie
