Adam gets hold of an Itiogawa Juniper which has been planted into a rock. The bonsai tree has been in development for a number of years, although is still very much in a part-trained state.
In the video, we’ll be analysing the design of the bonsai tree, pruning branches and wiring. The tree starts off already planted into the rock. Initially, it has already been wired. This wire is removed, the tree is pruned, shaped and rewired. We hope to continue working on it next year and will do a follow up video at that time.
The video has been recorded over the course of serval months, from spring to autumn.
It’s a nice video for beginners to bonsai and we’ll keep the information straightforward and easy to understand.

I think it would scare me too Adam. great transformation and it definitely looks loads better. Can you tell me wjen the first bit of work was started and the last bit you filmed? Looking forward to see this develop – cheers, Xav
What a difference you have made to that tree. It was quite an ugly duckling when you acquired it. Can't wait to see the final outcome.
I found this video of particular interest with my Juniper San Jose in mind which we discussed. Keep these videos coming your style is so interesting for an old amateur like me.
Bonsai phill very good video Adam nice looking tree love the shape now
Great video Adam 👍
A very interesting piece of material.
Most impressive. I would have given up as soon as I realised the effort that was involved but you did it. Well done.
Thank you for all your videos! Really appreciate them, and find them super useful!
Recently ordered a young Golden Larch from your website – super excited to learn more about the art of bonsai 🙂
Had a few questions and wondered if you could offer some guidance:
1 – I've read that I should keep the Larch outside, but "winter-protect" the tree from frost. What does this mean for me and how do I action it? Do I need to buy a mini greenhouse or a cold frame? Or would it be okay in the British winters on its own (in in a 9b zone)?
2 – As for pruning and wiring… Is this something I don't need to worry about right now until the end of winter/start of spring? Or shall I begin removing some of the large branches at the internodes at this stage in winter?
3 – The seller recommend repotting in Spring 2024, so I'm not too worried about that for now. I'm aware it will need regular watering… That said, would the rain (which is all too common in the UK), pose a threat to the tree? Similar to question 1, is this something I need to protect it from?
4 – Are there any other considerations I need to think about? And would any of the above apply to the other trees I've purchased (yet to arrive): Chinese Elms and a Japanese Holly bonsai.
Thank you so much for your help. Looking forward to learning and growing 🙂
