Welcome to Diary of a Yorkshire Gardener, I’m Francesca and this is my gardening channel 🌱
I grow as much food and flowers as I can cram into our medium sized garden in Harrogate, North Yorkshire (UK)
I love growing exotic/unusual plants and mushrooms. I preserve and can as much homegrown produce as I can, for all year round eating. Chutneys, jams, pickles.. you name it, I’ve made it! I share beginner gardening and preserving tips, info and inspiration.
I would love for you to follow my gardening journey by SUBSCRIBING to my channel! 🥰

Physalis Peruviana are one of my favourite things to grow! 💛
⠀⠀⠀
Following pretty yellow flowers is a papery pod encasing bright orange fruits. Whilst the pods make the fruit extremely decorative (they are a popular exotic garnish for desserts) the husk actually serves an important purpose as picked fruit left within the husk will have a ‘shelf life’ of a month or more at room temperature.
⠀⠀⠀
I love to eat these raw as a snack or in fruit salads. You can also make pies and jam with them!👌
⠀⠀⠀
My TOP TIPS for growing Physalis are:
⠀⠀⠀
🌱Ideally they need a LOT of room to grow. They’re quite thuggish and will spread out along the ground.
⠀⠀⠀
🌱I’ve grown them both in pots and in the ground, in the greenhouse and outside. Outside in the ground is best for yield. It was a hassle to grow them in the greenhouse personally as they need a lot of root space, trimming back and water twice a day in hot weather.
⠀⠀⠀
🌱 If outside I water when I can and give them a general purpose liquid feed once or twice a month.
⠀⠀⠀
🌱They stay small for ages and then all of a sudden have some crazy growth spurts! Don’t be discouraged at the start if they’re slow to grow.
⠀⠀⠀
🌱Protect them from frost! The slightest hint and mine die. I usually sow inside in Feb and plant out in July when it’s warm. I start harvesting fruit from September onwards.
⠀⠀⠀
🌱They’re treated as an annual however if overwintered correctly in a greenhouse, they’re actually a perennial.
⠀⠀⠀
🌱 Harvest when the husks are turning yellow and crispy. The berry inside should be a nice orange colour! Unripe Physalis can be poisonous.
⠀⠀⠀
If you have a question on growing Physalis, let me know in the comments and I’ll try my best to answer ☺️
