The Spirit of the Garden: Isamu Taniguchi



During World War II, the U.S. government arrested and interned U.S. citizens of Japanese, Italian, and German descent in camps located across the country, including in Texas. A former Japanese internee—Isamu Taniguchi—held at the Crystal City camp continued to live in Texas following his release and eventually built a Japanese garden in Austin’s Zilker Park as a monument to peace.
