Watercolor Garden Sketchbook Stencil Lifting and Pastel Pencil Techniques 😍

Watercolor Garden Sketchbook Stencil Lifting and Pastel Pencil Techniques 😍: In this video I will share two of my favorite techniques for adding finishing touches to our watercolor sketchbook entries. Stencil Lifting technique where I use stencils to gently lift areas to lighten, soften, or add visual interest. Pastel Pencil technique, using pastel pencils to adjust values, both in lightening and darkening, as well as enhancing colors and textural interest.

These techniques can be used broadly, as the final touches, as a way to get finer details, and my favorite as a tried and true rescue plan if your painting needs a little more finesse but can not handle anymore watercolor layers.

How do I decide where to use these techniques? Ask yourself are your colors balancing? Highlights? Value? Details? Texture? We can balance our colors using another layer of watercolor or the colorful pastel pencils, add balancing highlights by lifting and lighter hue pastel pencils, add balancing values with negative painting and darker hue pastels, and add balancing textures with dry brushing and dragged pastel pencils. Lastly using the pencils are a great way to add details.

  1. Beautiful result. As you are adding pastels will you need to fix the painting when finished and could you use watercolour pencils dry instead of pastels if you don't have pastels? Thank you so much for sharing your techniques, always look forward to your videos.

  2. I am confused about how to buy the stencil you are using. Is it yours and you are suggesting making my own stencils? I don’t want to do that I want to buy that stencil & others you have used. I bought a Tim Holzer circle one but disappointed as circles were very small. Hope you answer as probably self evident & I’m missing the obvious. I enjoy your work, well done. Thank you

  3. Beautiful, as always πŸ™‚ I've used pastel pencil on top of my watercolor but hadn't tried the little brush – I have those smoothie brushes so will try adding the technique to my repertoire.
