How to keep your cheap supermarket herbs alive! | Basil growing tips | Diary of a Yorkshire Gardener

always buy my basil plants from the supermarket as they’re super cheap and you can turn one plant into 40 or 50 straight away!
⠀⠀⠀
I used to get so annoyed as they’d always die on me when I tried to keep it alive in the pot it came in!!
⠀⠀⠀
Now I buy one plant in spring, separate them out and never need to buy any more basil for the rest of the year. You can even take cuttings from basil and root them in water, meaning your 40 or 50 turns into 100s of plants!
⠀⠀⠀
Pinching is an absolute must too (with most plants I’ve learned!) however I remember how weary I was of doing it when I first learnt about it 😂

I kept the strongest plants on my kitchen windowsill and plant the rest in any gaps outside as they’re great companion plants for lots of other plants. For example they help to repel certain insects from tomatoes and peppers!
