You need to invest in a small tiller. That was a lot of work, I know I have let things go too. Now at nearly 100 in California I know I need to trim bushes but I don't want to. I have to do it early in the morning or around 7 at night.

Have you tried mulch? I don't have much weed in my garden beds because there is decorative rocks or wood chips.

The only way I have found to keep the weeds down is to put down landscaping "fabric". You can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot and put it down around your existing plants even. Then, put a layer of mulch on top. It's not completely foolproof but I would say it improved the weed growth by about 90% in my case.
