  3. I love your japanese maples! I have quite a few in my yard and their autumn colour gets better and better each year as they gain size. I had one american holly in my yard and was glad to see it go when it grew too close to the house, because the leaves were so prickly. No fun to get close to, and can hurt you even when they drop. I recently discovered osmanthus fragrans which is a large-growing (12 feet or so ) evergreen shrub, hardy to zone 7 (so you could grow it), and it has inconspicuous flowers in winter that are extremely fragrant – sun to part shade. Also relatively fast growing. This plant met all the requirements for my hedge as I didnt want something I would have to top every now and then to control height.
